I'm in!
...oh, wait....
....I'm not.
But I'm in for tri-tip. :D
What time for lunch? I'd say noon, but between cleaning up and possible racetrack traffic, I'm not sure. Does 1 o'clock sound OK? And do they take reservations?
Well, I'd say one should work, but you can always just call me to say you're running late. As for reservations, I don't know....what do I look like? The ride organizer?:p:D
I don't know....what do I look like?
I'd say you're looking a bit blue.
I'm in. And Joy, I'll check on availability of my parents' shower for post-ride cleanup.
Oh, and I see in the other thread that my riding attire has already been picked out for me.
how far is this from SD? i really want to ride with some of these people i talk to online with all the time....
About 115 miles from the UTC area.
I'd be in for this ride, but as of earlier this week, I'd made plans with a friend to do the ride, starting from Encanto Park, this Saturday.

further details..? :D
Well, a friend who was into cycling several years before I started is going to be in the area this weekend so we had planned out a little ride this Saturday. He's got a time trial bike but he still climbs with it so more power to him. I'll get trounced anyway...
Plans could change to Sunday, but its about 80% set for Saturday. Start time would be ~7am. I don't know if my friend will be attempting to climb to the ski lifts but I'll be giving it a go. (There's some kind of weird obligation to do it every time if you've already done it once.)
And not to hijack the thread, would you want me to keep you updated on it George?
And not to hijack the thread, would you want me to keep you updated on it George?Thank you....If I'm able to ride Sat morning and if you guys are still doing this I'll PM you for further details....thanks!
what is the pace be like? do you guys have stops or no-drops zone?
thanks.
Hi Gary
This is not a no-drop ride, mainly because it looks like a small group, and we have to get back at a certain time. I'm a pretty slow climber compared to Jschen so I'm the weakest link... but I have done this climb before.
If you're not sure you can do the whole loop, one option is to park at the base of GMR. If you find you cannot make the entire ascent, you can turn around and coast all the way down the hill to your car. :)

Uaually there is a regroup point, maybe the gate/fork at GMR and Ridge Rd. Then they will drop you!:D
What is a no drop zone?:o

Mr. Beanz,
I guess you answer my question. Mainly, I was trying to refer a place or a particular section of the ride where the group will wait and re-group. So I wont get lost :D
thanks for your help.
cheers.

Hi Joy,
Thanks for the head up.
How steep the climb compare to the ride to Granvia Altamira? I even (accidently:o) went up north on Portuguese Bend road from Palos Verde Dr. N and stop at the junction of Crest Rd. That was quite a climb for me, considering there were not too many banks to recover from the ascent. I did stop about 2 times to just re-group. Wonder if the GMR are more extreme?
Thank again .
Cheers,
Gary
I'm not completely sure about the climb you're talking about, but I'll try to provide some input.
The climb up GMR is something like 11 miles long. The first 8 miles or so is steady and unrelenting climbing. Not extremely steep (probably averages under 6%, with a few sections transiently steeper), but it just keeps on going. GRR is another 12 miles of rolling terrain.
If you're not sure of your abilities, I'd second Joy's suggestion of parking at the bottom of GMR and taking a crack at GMR. You can always back out and turn around if it's too much for you, or take it at your own pace if you decide our pace is a bit too furious. At our climbing speeds, the GMR climb takes a bit over an hour.

GMR takes an hour but the Ridge Rd takes another hour. I think that section is about 4-5% average. Not as steep as GMR but tough cause you're tired from the first 8 (GMR from gate). Second section (Ridge Rd) is 13 miles to the village that Joy speaks of!:D
But once you're to the Village, It's all downhill from there back to the cars if you start at Mills. If you start from Mills, you will ad another 2 or 3 miles of gentle climbing up to the GMR gate. But good for a warm up.

Gary, Via del Monte/Altamira may be slightly steeper in a few sections, but the main difference is that GMR/GRR is a long climb. I'd equate GMR/GRR to PVE/Crest, about 4-5 times back to back.

Can't you just leave your car and walk over like . . . all of the 1/16th mile to get to the darn place? :p

Hey L-Man! http://starwarsloser.info/smile/mad/mad0116.gif (http://www.squidoo.com/seonorwich)
I'll have you know that I park in the Special People lot... so that means I have to walk a QUARTER mile!

Gary, keep training in the PV hills and in November or December I'll take you and Sally up GMR at your pace. Sort of an "intro to GMR" type thing. Once you get the taste of it, you'll get addicted!

Excellent...yes Oscar and Dave are both great...they are my lbs also...
Looking forward to meeting all the new faces on the 14th!!
Is the happy couple still planning on doing this one? I don't like being the third wheel, but I'm looking for a short-ish ride on Sunday. Might just do Rose Cafe.

And is the happy couple still having lunch following the ride with lunch at Woodranch? I don't like being the fourth wheel, but I do need to eat. :D

I might be up for a GMR run, Vance you wanna go?
You boys go play! I'll hang back with my better half... but please join us for tri tip lunch in Arcadia!
You boys go play!
Sounds like we're not wanted, Jon. :p
Of course you're wanted. But you'll just go by me with a wooossshhhh and I won't see you again for 20 miles! :p
Besides Vance, you need to eat more. Prison camp, eh?
Besides Vance, you need to eat more. Prison camp, eh?
I have a healthy appetite. :)
I'm thinking about going. My bud Lee says he's interested. I have to be back by 11 or so, cause of a birthday party at noon. Just might head straight home from Baldy and pick up the truck in the late afternoon.
1 hour to GMR, 2.25 hours across. 5 minutes down Baldy? Sounds doable!:D
Not sure if we'll keep up with HT cause we're both out of shape, but we'll try!

This is on Sunday, right?
5 minutes down Baldy?
Between Mills Rd and GRR is 8 miles. That's a 96 MPH average!
:p
Come join us, guys.
Exaggerating but after climbing GMR, sure feels like it!:D
Let's make lunch at noon. We should be back by then. Wood Ranch in Arcadia. Tri tip for all!!! :)
Damn Sunday rides! :D

But I'm vegetarian:(
But I'm vegetarian:(
They have a good portabello sandwich. Careful with the BBQ sauce, though... that stuff might as well be hot fudge. :)
I'm in, see you guys there!
SONNUVAH! I was thinking tomorrow! Sorry out for Sunday!:(
But I'm vegetarian:(
Hey!!!
No :( on being a vegetarian! You should be :) for not eating methane-producing cows. I wish I were as disciplined, but I love my meat. (I also can't digest soy protein, but that's TMI)
+1 on the portabello sandwich. I had that once and it was great.
I love my meat.
This is really all you needed to say. :D
I might not be there by 6:45, but I'll be ready to roll at 7. After all, I'll be riding to the start. An excruciatingly long 2 minute ride. :p
im out i drank too much today
Fun ride. :) Rode with Happytime, and ran across Speedee and his group near the end of GRR. Had a bit of fun on GMR where I decided to try to hit 20+ MPH going up GMR. Hit 21 MPH. :) (Not sustained, of course!) There was quite a bit of wind out there, which made for a 55 MPH top speed descending Baldy Rd. :D
Fun ride, Jschen, thanks! It was so crystal clear you could see all the buildings downtown and once we got a few thousand feet up, the air was nicely chilled for a good climb. Those crosswinds along GRR were a little hairy... enough to make me a bit more cautious than usual down Baldy Road. I wish my legs felt a little better though. They started out stiff and never really got the groove back. Still, Jschen's always the gentleman and took it slow.
Ran into three hot guys on GRR. I was ready to get to hoot'n and holler'n when I hear someone call out to Jschen, "Hey are you Jason?" Crap! Someone we may know! No hoot'n and holler'n today. :p Turns out it was Speedee, one of my local South Bay peeps, coming up from East Fork with his two buds  ;)
After washing up a Jschen's parents' house (yes, folks, not only do they have a 4-car climate-controlled garage, but it has a small, adjoining parking lot! ;)) I headed out for a noontime lunch at Wood Ranch with ME, where she regaled me with tales of the Great Shoe Hunt of '07, whilst I tore into a large hunk of meat. Then it was off to work, chasing after racehorses in unforgiving 90° Arcadia sun, then home. Long day, but fun. :)
