Bicycle Mechanics - Zipp care

So I got a beautiful set of 404 clinchers off ebay awhile back and I'm getting them ready to roll.

I read in Zipp's own Maintenance & Care Manual that regular cloth Velox rim tape should not be used (in bold print) on Zipp clinchers b/c of tight tolerances and that style of tape is too thick. Of course they recommend Zipp brand rim tape only, it's thinner...which I am not opposed to buying if it is the right thing to use.

Is this a legit concern or marketing at work? Zipp clincher owners have any thoughts on this.

I did a search and couldn't find anything, also posted this in Road forum.

Velox comes in a narrow width (16mm) but same thickness. I recently had a couple of lift offs of the tire while inflating and finally traced this to shifted rim tape that got up into the hook area on the rim and interfered with tire seating, The rear wheel had offset spoke holes which put them closer to the bead seat area and over 6-8yrs there had been some drift of the tape. Probably
best you heed Zipps provisos here and use their tape. After all it should last years.

I used VeloPlugs (http://www.veloplug.com/index.php?http://www.veloplug.com/intro.html) instead of tape in my 404's. They weigh less, and I haven't had any trouble mounting tires on the rims.

So far, no complaints.

I think from a personal safety point of view I'd go for the Zipp rim tape, it wouldn't be a nice thing to have the tire blow off on a descent, which would probably damage the great wheels and yourself. $6 is not a lot for a bit of extra piece of mind.
