Just had some new wheels built around my (older) Campy hubs and after the first ride, I noticed a substantial glob of grease around the left axle. I plan on asking the shop if they repacked the bearings back there but can anyone think of a reason why grease would otherwise migrate out of a hub?

Poor or defective seal, too thin grease, too much grease, or a bent axle.

Hell, that happens all the time when I repack a wheel. Mostly because I use an assload of grease. Wipe off and go.

If the shop rebuilt your hub bearing, this is something you'd like to know about, I think. Next time, make sure they let you know about things like that. You may want to call to confirm that they did infact rebuild the bearings, and the condition of the races when they inspected it, and whether new balls were used.
