Hi There,

I have an older mountain bike and I would like to replace its stem with a 1" diameter stem. However, my bike currently has a 1-1/8" diameter stem. Can I get a shim that I can insert into my threaded headset that would allow me to use a stem that is sized for a 1" threaded headset with my bike?

Thanks in advance.

I'd like to use a Nitto Technomic extra long stem on my bike, but these are only 1" in diameter. They don't offer a 1-1/8" diameter stem.

There are adapters made for that purpose:

Thanks Dirtdrop. I'll have to visit my LBS to see if he can order one (or if he has one in stock).

Several year ago I was looking for exactly that type of adapter as I wanted to use an existing set of 1" road bars and stem to convert a Trek hardtail MTB for drop bar use and the Trek had a 1-1/8" headset/fork. I never found one and wound up buying a 1-1/8" quill stem. It wasn't that easy to locate either.

Where did you find that adapter?

edit !!

Whoops!! - these parts (A-Headset shims) are meant for threadless forks and stems. Not sure how they would work with a threaded system.:o

I think you asked me that last time this came up. The answer was that I can't remember and I still can't. "Online somewhere" is the best I can do.
