Northern California - Loop Around the Bay

Thinking of doing a ride from Santa Clara to Dumbarton, through Fremont, then back to Santa Clara. Anyone interested? Bunch of boring junk miles, but at least it's miles. If not, I'll try see if I can make it a century. :D

How many miles would that be?

I've done that route in the past. It is very flat and not very scenic except for the bridge part, which is very noisy. Distance is about 40 miles. You could make it longer and more scenic by adding Calaveras and Sierra in the east bay.

I could meet you somewhere along the route, maybe close to the bridge?

Hey Ron, Just curious, since you're a century (double century) hound:) Did you ever do the now defunct "Bike around the Bay" ? I signed up for it but they cancelled the ride. Do you know why they cancelled? Logistics? Insurance?

I'd be in, when you thinking of doing this?

I'm thinking of doing this Saturday, either 8 or 9. As far as distance, not sure yet. It probably won't be a full century ... and yes, it's boring, but I'm just in it for the mileage.

I never did the "Bike Around the Bay". If we had a route slip, I would be more than happy to lead a BF ride with that route.

I did a loop similar to this last year (actually I did the "Around the Bay" ride on http://cycling.stanford.edu/) It's flat and easy and I enjoyed stopping in the little historic town of Alviso.

ah, if you were doing it Sunday, I'd totally be down. But Saturday doesn't work for me... darnit.

It's about 60 miles, and 1234 feet elevation gain ... wow, now that's a flat route!

oooh.. i thought that meant the whole bay... like santa clara to vallejo and back down... sounds like just the southern 1/3 of the bay... i was gonna attempt sfo to oakland international last month but got busy...

Ooooooh...i think i gotta wait for next summer when the daylight hours are longer..don't think i can do a double with these short times... with my rate that'd would take me approx...15 hours actual pedalling time :eek: which comes out to be almost 18 hours..out on the route..errrr...

We started in Sunnyvale, rode up the SF peninsula over the GG Bridge and into Marin on day 1, stayed overnight at a funky little motel in Novato, and on day 2 rode across Rt. 37 and the Carquinez Bridge into Martinez and down thru the east bay back to Sunnyvale.

It was about 100 miles per day but the studly amongst us could do it in one day.

I think that would be the way to do it ...Bay in a day seemed pretty brutal in that summer heat.

Well, I couldn't do my ride after all. I had an errand to do in the morning, but was able to get out. I basically took Caltrain up to the city, and rode from AT&T park across Golden Gate, through Fort Baker, then into Sausalito, then back the same way I came. It was a perfect day to do it too, especially with Fleet Week going on. Was able to see all the way across the bay, so visibility was excellent.

My club has that ride this Saturday, but it starts in the parking lot behind Denny's at Mission and Warm Springs. I think they are using Montague, Central Expwy, Foothill, and back over the Dumbarton. I need a ride like this, but you guys would leave me in the dust on my 'bent.

I've heard 'bents are fast on the flats. Something about the aero advantage?

I'm about 10% "more" aero on my Stratus than my Trek, but the motor on the 'bent is in need of a serious tune-up.;)
