Just back from getting a long overdue cut.
For years I used to shave my own head after giving up on the local cutters, then I found a decent guy.
While I can be cheap about a lot of things, 55€ doesn't seem thatbad a price.
You?
I don't think I've ever paid more than $15-20, tip included.
Then again, I haven't had one at all in going on a year now... :p

Here is something thats been bugging me for a while. Do you tip the barber who is his only employee...
The good thing about living in the Netherlands: no need to tip. :D

I've long since given up trying to look attractive. I now cut my hair w/ a $20 beard trimmer. It doesn't look great, but it doesn't look horrible. And I can go through the routine in about 15 minutes.
Bonus is that I don't have to force myself through awkward small talk with someone for 10 minutes.

good question.
my guy just went solo. was thinking of tipping him, but didn't in the end.
I try to avoid haircuts for as long as possible.
I have seen what I look like with no hair, thanks to the Navy. I'm not doing that again.
Yesterday, I paid $35 for my haircut which is about normal for me.

I spent $35 on a new pair of clippers back in college, probably 15 years ago. Aside from my monthly razor fund of about $5, and a $4 can of shaving cream (so let's round it up to $10/month to keep my dome shiny smooth) there's no barber costs.

$12 plus a $2 tip, yesterday
It's not about the price but about the timing. I figured it made no difference what i paid if I cut down the visits to the barber to a bi-annual schedule. Been working out great for years.
 I'm three times a year. About $25 a visit, but I get the conditioner and the mousse too. Plus, my stylist gives a great scalp massage while washing.

good question.
my guy just went solo. was thinking of tipping him, but didn't in the end.
Back at home the barber shop i typically go to is run by 3 people, so i feel a tip is justified...mostly because i don't know who takes home the bread, i think it's the old guy with gray hair, but it could be the old guy with brown hair. Hmm...
But now in Iowa City i found a guy who sits in his shop all day and cuts hair every once and a while, it's him and only him, i tip him out of habit and some likely social norms that force me to act :o
I like the guy and everything but every time i tip him i walk away wondering what the hell the point is.
my place, Ray's Barber Shop charges $14 for a mans clipper cut. This is a real barber shop with bad coffee and stale donuts and a poster on the wall, circa 1950, where you point to the style you want. Then the barber, who has been ignoring you, cuts it however he wants to anyway, and calls it the "businessman's cut."

Can you get a straight razor shave? It's only a real barbershop if you can get a straightrazor shave.
/ Gotta get back to Portland so I can go to Bishop's!
I really do not like straight razors, gay razors, any kind of razor really. The sight of a straight razor makes me want to run off to British Columbia and become a lumberjack.

About $100 bucks for a decent set of clippers on ebay a couple of years ago. Haircuts now only cost me 5 minutes.

I trade mine for membership at my gym...no cash changes hands
My barber, we'll call him Steve cuz that's his name, charges me $10 for the head and $2 for the beard. He throws in trimming the bushes in my ears. I always give him $15.

I wouldn't let anyone chop off my magnificent lumberjack beard, but a good straight-razor head shave is beyond comparison.

I don't have enough hair to justify paying someone else to cut it.
I bought a cheap reachargeable kit several years ago, and have not been to a barber shop since.

I shave mine.....I end up having to buy more sunscreen so I guess it evens out in the end..
I keep wanting to let my hair grow long, but end up getting it cut every 6-8 weeks, because of some presentation or other. Same with me wanting to dye a non natural color.
Hopefully, this will change once I get a stable job out of college.

Have you ever found yourself wishing you were a girlie, just like your dear papa?

I'm cool with that. Maybe we could do a bit of shopping, have some tea, whatever.
I bought a trimmer seven years ago. Taken care of my hair myself ever since. Total cost over seven years (assuming the trimmer stops working today): US$60! Considering I trim the hair down on average every 2-3 weeks, that's something like ¢40/cut. Saves me a good deal of money on hair care products as well...

My wife does it for me since it just a number 2 trimmer. But of course since my wife does it, it ultimately cost me more than you want to know.

If we had more clients like you, my wife and I would be out of business. The majority of our male clients come in at least twice each month for cuts, fades, and buzzes...:D
Our salons charge $10 on average for men's cuts and that includes a wash.

1,000 colones that is.
that would translate to about 1.90 - yes, one dollar and 90 cents.
There are cheaper places but I do like to splurge a little on my hair... :D

Turkey's a great place for that.
The first time I went I didn't bring a shaving kit. I had come for a day and stayed for a week. By the end of the week I was due a shave, and decided to go to a barber.
I sit down in the chair, and the barber puts a towel on my face, then lathers up some soap, and starts sharpening the razor on a leather strop.
Just as he's about to start shaving, he asks me "Where you from?". I reply "America".
He steps back, looks at me, puts the razor back to my neck, looks at me with this wild look. Pauses... then says "America? America! I LOVE America!"
Scared the hell out of me for a second. It was also the best damn shave I ever had.
$20. 16 + 4 dollar tip.
Never a great cut though. I just like handing the person 20 dollars and leaving.

You?
55€ ??
I hope you got a happy ending with that.
I bought the "best" trimmer/clipper money can buy, A Wahl Super Taper. That is what a lot of professional barbers use. I paid E 50 because it was slightly used, i cleaned it up thorough. But even if i had paid double for it new it would have been a great investment. I haven't gone to the barber for 12 years or so. Didn't buy the Wahl until about 3 years ago. A pity as i had 3 other trimmers in the meantime that sucked! Blunt, Slow, painful and quick to break.
I do it myself or have others do it. People always ask whether i went to the barber, so presumably i don't look like a mangy mutt. Paying a barber to shave my head seems madness.
Which isn't to say i only crop it. At various times i have had lots of different styles, all done with my own trimmer.
E 55 seems highway robbery! Did it include a complementary bike tire or something?!

1. don't convert it to dollars. think of it as 55$.
2. considering that i was paying 40$ for a haircut when i was still in NYC 15 years ago, that's not a bad markup.
3. i look frakking fantastic, and the ladies agree. ;) :D

NYC has got to be the markup capital of the world. $40 US is still too much for a guy's haircut.

55 Euro for this haircut? Bargain.
