I just started biking and was wondering what are the benefits of wearing bibs? Seems to me they would be hotter to wear (at least here in Texas).

I can only speak from experience and the comments of my cycling buddies. Suffice it to say, if you aren't built like Lance, cycling shorts can have a tendengy to be irritating to the midregion (gut). Sometimes they roll down, or they might dig into the soft part (fat) of your stomach with the elastic waste. Bibs don't rely on the waist to stay up so you don't have any of these problems.
There may be other reasons as well.

no, the real question is, why NOT? ;)
it's cuz regular shorts can get uncomfortable at the waist, especially if you're flabby like me. bib shorts have no waistband, so your flab can hang out as far as it likes. ;)
maybe i'll post pics of my flab for your viewing pleasure ;)
PS: i've lost 5 lbs of flab in the last 3 weeks... woohoo!!

because they are more comfortable than half shorts. the bib straps themselves are usually made of a lightweight wicking fabric or mesh and are not uncomfortable in hot weather.
