Southeast - Out of curiousity.. what's it like in Memphis?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Looks like I'll be there for 3 month, starting around late January.

Curious about group rides in the area, routes, and early season races.

fwiw - I'm looking for road rides, preferably with racers/competitive cyclists.

Any input is appreciated.

Not from there, but here's a website for a local group I know of:

The area is generally flat.

I wouldn't expect much snow.

Sorry, that's about all the cycling information I can give you. I haven't been to that end of the state in years.

This will tell you all you need to know:http://www.midsouthtrails.com/midsouthtrails/index.html
I'm a newbie but I've ridden the Tour De Wolf and it's a blast(at least for beginners) but it's no cake walk either. Stanky Creek is more advanced which is why I've probably never been there. Hope this info helps.

Thanks, but I'm not into mountain biking.

The Memphis Hightailers offer weekend groups rides. http://www.memphishightailers.clubexpress.com/

They're a good, active club and ride all year round. RB Cyclery in Bartlett (a suburb) also has weekend rides from their store. For the best info on routes visit a local bike shop when you get down here. Midtown Bikes, The Bike Peddler, Outdoors, Inc. and RB's are good ones. Here's a link to a good selection of routes:

b.. b... bump.

question: what's the terrain like? flat? hilly? rolling?

i was there over the summer. my impression (from a car) was that it flat-ish, with some rolling hills at best. true?

Looks like I will be the next Memphis area rider, also. I have tentatively accepted a proposal to begin working in Memphis, hopefully, by the end of January. I don't quite know where I will be living, yet. They will be putting me up in temporary corporate housing for at least the first thirty days. Then it will be apartment living until the kids get out of school in the spring and we sell our house in LA and buy something around Memphis.

I do pretty much road riding, raced a few road races, and have competed in quite a few triathlons over the years....but I am pretty much a laid back roadie these days just enjoying time in the saddle! I'll probably be looking to find some good routes in Northern Mississippi....probably the area we'll end up. It'll be nice to be back in SEC country having been stuck in Big 10 land for so long!!!
