I used to live in Charlotte, and for a while taught in the Char-Meck Schools. I remember feeling that something was wrong with the look of the school, and I realized that there were no bike racks. I asked one of the administrators and was told that it was the Char-Meck Board of Education policy that students were forbidden from riding their bikes to school.

Now, I can see that this policy makes sense for the real little kids, and possibly at some individual schools, depending on conditions in the neighborhood--but a district-wide policy? And people wonder why kids are so fat.

don't take this the wrong way, but charlotte is turning into atlanta. unbridled sprawl. they seem to hate on bikes down there. my dad lives there.

i do like the us national whitewater center though.

And look at all the new growth in the surrounding counties, Cabarrus, Union, Lancaster, York. The are all heavily into urban growth with almost no provision for bike traffic.

In the county I live in, Union, there is not one single bike lane that is not in some park. and motorists seem to be disgusted with cyclists there.

Charlotte has a good idea, but if you have to drive there to use bike lanes/paths it is only a half-hearted effort.

I've done my best over the years to influence control over "urban sprawl" in CLT, ever since I was an architecture major at UNCC waaaay back in '84. Unfortunately, the developers have had their way to the point that Bruton is now close to pulling out of Concord, leaving us TT-philes with no venue for our TT series. :(

But, back to topic, did anyone make it to the meeting? It totally slipped my mind, though I did fill out the online survey, and provided my name and email to the City of Charlotte for follow-up input. As yet, I've heard nothing. Did anyone else do the same, and have you heard back? <curious Vega look>

Me thinks that may have been lip-service on the part of the city.... :o :(

Looking at the maps of the greenways, they are very nice, but they don't actually go anywhere. One drives to the terminus, unloads one's bike of the car, rides around, then loads one's bike and goes home. There are some exceptions, but unless you are going somewhere specific. . . . .

On the positive side, the last time I visited Charlotte I was pleased to see how many of the bike racks on the CATS busses were being used. Here in Charleston the busses have had racks for a little more than a year now, but one seldom sees them actually used, although more than before.
