Just as I was pulling in to work on my bike, two weeks ago Friday, I spotted a orange tabby cat dead on the side of the road...hit by a car it looked like. As I climbed the stairs up to my office door, I heard baby kitties crying in the underbrush below. So of course I went down to investigate...and sure enough, two kittens...same coloring as the dead cat in the road, were stumbling around crying. I went and checked out the dead cat in the road...sure enough, a momma cat who looked to have been nursing. Crap.
By this time everyone else is rolling into work and wonder what I am doing...so I explain. Our receptionist pipes up right away...'Bring those kittens up here, I'll take at least one home. Two other co-workers say they will do the same...so I am off to round up kittens, while Tera runs up the the pet store to get some formula and bottles.
I get the two kittens I spotted, but everyone insists that there must be more. So I keep going outside and checking, listening and rummaging around in the underbrush, but can't find any others. In the meantime the first two kittens are getting fed and bathed "Eek, fleas!". I had a TV dinner for lunch and took the remains down to the underbrush, figuring if there were any other kittens, the smell might draw them out. Sure enough an hour later I hear another kitten crying...and there she is, right by my tv dinner. So I round her up, feed her and bathe her myself.
Well of course, all but one of the people who claimed they would take a kitten backed out for one reason or another...but luckily one of the gals from upstairs commits to take one. So there is only one kitten left who is unspoken for....the last one I found, the runt of the litter and cute as all get out. The rest of the story is obvious, isn't it? Yes, we have a new kitten.

Both of my female dogs took to the kitten like mothers. She loves playing with them too...no fear at all!
Here is Bailey with a little furball sleeping in on her legs

And Bandit, worrying over her as she sleeps all curled up with the heating pad after a bath to de-flea her somewhat.

and with Thor, who's no longer the littlest and never had much use for cats.
http://www.chipcom.net/pets/kitten_thor.jpg
She looked to be about 3 weeks old when I found her. I've had to drive to work and take her with me so I could bottle feed her...but she's making progress weaning from the bottle and is already litter trained pretty well. Finally made a vet appointment for next week...hopefully they can give me something 'safe' to get rid of any remaining fleas and that stubborn flea dirt.
Tonight she figured out she can climb stairs...my baby is growing up!
It's all over now Chip. Save one cat, you have to save them all. I know, we foster for the local shelter.
But good for you. I think that's great.

Good on ya, Chip. Ya done good. See, had you been in a car, you never would have heard the kittens' cries.

Good job, chip. I just finished rescuing three feral kittens that had made a home in my neighborhood. Found homes for all three, thankfully, since I'm allergic.
if that is the tv dinner kitty you gotta name her swanson or hungryman or something along those lines. awesome pictures.

i so wanted to go there, about you tramping in around in weeds looking for it, but that would be too high brow for me.

That's how they get you. The cuteness. If they were baby slugs, no one would try to adopt them. But cute little furballs beg to be picked up. Good job chip!
jyo, my boys have come home from walks with giant slugs more than once. admittedly they ended up squished on the front steps as soon as the novelty wore off and it was time to come in for dinner. still they were giant slugs.

Be glad you didn't end up squished on the front porch when your wife brought you home to meet her parents, ya big slug.

Have you broken her in for a bike ride yet?
Just put her in your jersey pocket, she'll be fine. ;)

A jersey is way too thin to protect my peaches-n-cream soft skin from them little needle claws!
I did take her for a spin in the handlebar bag...but I ain't gonna commute 25 miles each way like that.

I think the 2nd pic with the puppy sniffing the kitten's butt and the kitten seeming to be growling could be workable with a bit of an imagination that i obviously do not have.

Yeah buddy...I'd rather take a baseball bat to the chops than them little claws in my back. Those little kitten claws are something else! I adopted a kitten off the street about 15 years ago. He was about 5 or 6 months old at the time. I had to give him daily baths and put ringworm goo on him for a week. I did this in 4 layers of long sleeve sweatshirts and he still got me quite a few times. My wife got a lot of good laughs from that.
Just another advantage to sons who enlist...I can still get all the bling! ;)

He still has his perches on the tops of chairs and couches that the little one hasn't claimed yet...but he's not happy about losing so much lap time!
