Greetings, Bike Forums massive!

Primitive Don here, writing from Logan Square in Chicago. Been lurking here for a few days, and I must say I'm astounded by what I've read. Been checking out the forums on Commuting, Road Cycling, and Fixed Gear/Single Speed; really enjoy absorbing the culture and lingo.

After much encouragement from co-workers, my wife and I signed up for the MS150 ride this year. I got an old Schwinn Le Tour off Craigslist, and found a really clean Schwinn World for my wife, and we dove in. We did a 33 mile ride to get our toes wet, then did 75 miles the first day of the MS150 through 6 and a half hours of constant pouring rain - a great introduction to cycling! Made our sunny 35 miles the next day seem like a breeze.

Have enjoyed the Lakefront path along Lake Michigan and the amazing North Branch trail up the Botanical Gardens. Lately I've been starting to commute to work in the Loop, 7 miles each way, getting to know the bike routes and watching more experienced cyclists navigate red lights and crowded intersections. Really enjoying the exhilaration of a morning bike ride and transportation-as-exercise. Also realizing how little I know about bikes and getting to know the folks at my LBS.

Drooling now, so must close.

Hope to see ya round!

Hello PD, is your LeTour a fixie now? Get some photos and show off your bikes in the Classic & Vintage forum....

Welcome to BF!

Hi East Hill,

Nope, I haven't converted the LeTour to a fixie just yet : ) It came to with the front derailleur and the smaller chain ring removed, so it's something of a 5-speed. Being a Total Noob I'm still attached to my gears and freewheel, but I'm aware that the fixed gear phenomenon is very big here. Pretty cool seeing the SS/FG conversions EVERYWHERE.

So far I replaced my trashed out wheels with an aluminum wheelset from Harris Cyclery and got a new chain and freewheel from the LBS. Also put some foam grip dealies on the handlebars. Still needs some love, but it's getting me to work and back very nicely!

Nice to hear from ya!

SS/FG is good, but don't get rid of any of the original equipment that came with your bike--what's left of it, at any rate...someone may one day want to make it back to stock :) .

Oh, except for the wheels...chrome rims look good, but they don't have much stopping power. You did well to replace them!

Don, welcome to the forums. You picked a nice time to start biking the North Branch Trail since the resurfacing project has almost been completed. About 25 years of enduring ruts and bumps is finally over.

Do you commute up Milwaukee Ave? Afternoons I am often on Grand/Milwaukee/Elston/California/NS Channel path. It's getting dark early. I may be looking for more lights on the bike.

Thanks for the welcomes!

I had been taking Milwaukee and then turning on Elston, but last couple of days I have been taking Milwaukee all the way. My bike is like the one in my avatar except blue with blue foamy grips. Just got a light, because it is definitely getting dark. I have to be at work by 8 and leave at 6. Hope to see ya round.
