Im a getting a brand new commuter bike (trek portland or lemond poprad disc). My question is what type of daily/weekly/monthly or even yearly things should i be doing to my bike to make sure it stays in tip top condish without taking it to the LBS?

Your best first step is to get a good bicycle maintenance manual and read it. It will go into more detail than you want right now but they all have chapters on routine maintenance and bike care along with the more involved replace/repair chapters. Bicycling Magazine's repair manual is a good first purchase. Park Tool's web site is also an excellent source of repair and maintenance info and, of course, Sheldon Brown's site is a treasure trove of articles on specific bike repairs.
