So I crashed and broke the seat on the MTB. I went to the LBS to buy a seat. This was attached:

There's a local cyclocross series I've been meaning to enter and I kind of dig the concept of the Jake as a potential rough road touring bike during the non-'cross season.
They had a 56cm which fit me perfectly. For reference, I ride a 58cm Trek 1500 and an 18" Kona Hoss as well.
For $670, I couldn't refuse.
So far, I've done some bombing around town on potholed city streets and some hot laps at our local cyclocross practice.
This thing is tough. It's got some potential to survive some serious clyde abuse. I had it going as fast as I could down rough and rocky single track with my 225 lbs. aboard. I had it air born a few times, and let's not forget the flying leaps back on the bike I'd take after dismounting.
The only serious problem I had was the headset came loose towards the end. I've tightened it back up, we'll see if it becomes a recurring problem.
I'm really happy with how the wheels held up. I've whanged my stock Trek 1500 wheels a couple times and broken spokes on the Hoss wheels. The Jake wheels are holding up fine so far, and I have NOT been kind to them.
The Tiagra/Sora set up leaves a lot to be desired, but it is what it is. It could potentially benefit from some lower gearing for touring duty, but you should be covered just fine for actual racing.
