General Cycling Discussion - Wrong Ratio :(

I was thinking about it today ...

I do a lot of travelling these days, but unfortunately most of it is in a motorized vehicle. I would love it if the biggest number in the list below was my cycling total for the week!!

Kms covered by car - 1000 kms :(
Kms covered by bicycle - 40 kms
Kms covered by walking - 18 kms

That's just SAD!!! Hopefully I'll be able to add a little bit to the cycling total tomorrow, but it won't be another 960 kms.

Theoretically, it could be done in 40 hrs though so it could be done over the weekend if you are determined and crazy enough, and have a support van and crew like RAAM! ;)

True, but you'd also have to factor my job and homework into that weekend time period. :D

I was car-free for 7 years while living in Winnipeg. Unfortunately now I live in central Alberta and commute to Edmonton for University. Somehow commuting by bicycle approx. 300 kms a day, plus classes, plus homework, plus work doesn't have the same appeal as my 13 km a day commute in Winnipeg. :D

And no, moving closer isn't an option ... rent is more expensive than commuting!

I could not wrap my head around spending more than 3 hours a day in my car and would be willing to pay more for rent, find a room-mate, or even just a room.

So...what are you studying at the U ?

If you are wondering about strange posts, I'm on pain meds right now. I crashed on a mountain bike trail a couple of Saturdays back and have been off the bike for 2 weeks tomorrow :eek: I blew the right rotator cuff!

Actually, along those lines, I'm working on an idea so that I can study for my midterms while driving ... my father got one of those digital voice recorders, I'm going to read my notes into it, and then play it back while driving.

Maybe I can even do that while cycling. Instead of the usual "What music do you listen to while cycling?" debate, I'll ask "What textbook do you listen to while cycling?"

I know that feeling ALL too well. My left shoulder is never going to be the same again. I tore the rotator cuff a few years ago in a random sweater-related incident. And then I separated the same shoulder earlier this year in a bicycle crash.

So that's the part of "Western Canuckistan" you're in? Did you get the snow this morning?

It actually takes me roughly 2 hours each way to do the commute because of all the construction in Edmonton ... which reminds me, they tore up my route to the University when I was last in on Thursday, so I'll have to find yet another way to get there. I do have a place to stay a couple nights each week, out by Leduc, but even so, there's still quite a bit of driving involved in that.

Actually, you should have seen me Monday! My shoulder reswelled,apparently I moved it wrong in my sleep and had to get a Cortizone shot. My Right Shoulder and Bicep looked like Arnold's in the Conan movies and my left looked like Woody Allen's! :eek:

Well, there are these things called online degree programs. I'm currently teaching an online class at Penn State. Not the best way to learn in my opinion but you could satisfy some of your requirements that way.

And yeah, I listen to audiobooks and audiolectures all the time. They're great if you're in the car and want to supplement your education with a little general knowledge.

Sadly, my particular program doesn't have an online option. It's kind of hard to learn how to teach, and to get comfortable standing in front of a class, when you're online. But it was definitely something I checked into.

Oh yeah, my practicum is local, but it doesn't start for a while yet. I'm still in the "how to teach" section of classes.

Once I start my practicum, I might even be able to commute by bicycle ... depending on weather, places to park the bicycle, and all that stuff.

I don't ride much between about September and April. I aim for about 100 kms a week, but that's it. I pack the bulk of my riding into my summers, and then my life basically consists of work, cycle, sleep, work, cycle, sleep. This past summer, my commute to work was 70 kms round trip, which I cycled several times. And of course, my weekends during the summer often consist of centuries or longer rides pretty much every weekend. That all adds up.

If you do design that kind of program, I'd like to see it!

You have never used a scantron?:)

After you have written your objectives, immediately write the test questions. Then go ride your bike while you contemplate which media and type of delivery is be:pst.

Logic is one of those things where you have to construct a proof and then give partial credit. It doesn't really lend itself to scantron exams.

Actually, I've never used Scantron now that I think of it. I always assign papers and essay exams.

Most of my profs use scantrons because it means they don't have to deal with the hassle of marking. I don't have a problem with that ... I have a problem with the innane multiple choice questions that go along with the scantrons.

One of my courses is entitled "Assessments" ... all about writing exams. I just wrote the midterm and it was a complete example of how NOT to write an exam. Everything my instructor told us not to do on multiple choice exams ... she did.

I get very tired of post-secondary education sometimes.

Multiple choice doesn't work in philosophy anyway. The day I administer a scantron test is the day that I quit to go sell insurance or something. Reading essay tests and papers is 90% headache to be sure, but there's always that tenth paper that has something interesting to say. If I did Scantron tests, I'd miss that. Sometimes your students have a thing or two to teach you.

I've noticed that education departments are full of people that aren't very good educators.
