Hi all,

I recently purchased a Rockhopper & i have been riding it quite a bit. One problem, The chain keeps coming off the big front chainwheel on sort of rough descents. The bike shop mechanic tells me this is normal,is this true? He looked it over & claimed not a thing wrong. I sort of find it hard to believe that my chain should normally disengage to the outside all the time without me shifting. Can someone help me here?

It is mostly true. Kind of depends on how rough the terrain is. Its why most (all?) downhillers use chainguides

Sounds like you need a limit screw adjustment. You will still drop the chain from time to time but not on the outside.

Are you pedaling that hard on rough descents to need your third chainring? I would think shifting to the second would prevent that. I haven't been on any rough descents lately, but when I was riding steady a few years ago, I was going down some rough stuff and maybe had it happen once, but not often for sure.

I only run 2 and a bashguard but most folks that run 3 up front put the chain on the big ring on decents to keep tension on the chain.

I see the front derailleur isn't the only thing that's too high.
