I need your help. I'm looking for a good training route starting from Rose Bowl. My wife and I wanted to practice some more climbs similar to the event on Oct. 14th.
I was told there will be some hills that we can connect from Rose Bowl and beyond. Because we are dropping the kids to my parents house, Rose Bowl area is the closest route that we can take off for few hours.
I'm hoping some of BFers who live around the area can help.
I'm think'g the distance (for full circle) around 40mi and consist of light to moderate hills with very very light (car) traffice as possilbe. ( my wife is still rather new with her cleats :p)
If anyone have their Bikely's route similar to the above mention, appreciate if you are willing to share the info.
Sincerely,
Gary

My routes start near my house which is 4 miles from the Rose Bowl, but here are some of them that go right by the Rose Bowl with the intention of doing some climbs.

This one has two challenging climbs for about 1000' in a 10 mile loop, so you can do as many laps as you want. Start the route from Salvia Canyon to Linda Vista north.

This is a 40+ mile ride with over 3000' of climbing going up the famous Big Tujunga and down the famous Angeles Crest, or you can reverse it. Jump on from the Rose Bowl by heading north up Salvia Canyon, right on Linda Vista, then right over the freeway to a left on Oak Grove.

35 miles with about 2000' of climbing including La Tuna Canyon. The pavement down Wentworth isn't the greatest, but it's still a nice ride. You can also catch this ride by taking Salvia to Linda Vista north and across the freeway to a left on Oak Grove.
Hope that helps, and I'm sure there will be plenty more options once other chime in. Enjoy your riding!

As for traffic, any of them should be great on a Sunday. I think La Tuna would have traffic on a weekday during rush hour (it's my commute to work too), but all of them are great on the weekends.

Lida or Berkshire/Highland to Chevy Chase into Glendale then Glenoaks into Scholl Cyn. peaks out above the golf course about 1500ft. with about 800ft. of climbing over 3mi.. While you're on that side of the Verdugo you could take Glenoaks over to Sonora and ride into Griffith Park. Both Scholl Cyn. and Griffith Park have little traffic on Sunday morning. While, I like UK's Foothill and La Tuna and ride them frequently, they do suffer from a heavy case of cars. As does Glenoaks. Another bit o'climbing without many cars is Emerald Isle from Chevy Chase to Camino San Rafeal (nice fast open road for about a mile, hit 50+mph here) to Mountain back to Verdugo to Foothill.
If you don't turn up Verdugo you could follow Mountain to Greenbriar or Royal to Old Phillips to Sunshine or work your way over to Starvale or Rimcrest. See Mapquest or like for exact directions.
These are mostly residential streets but they are very good for climbing training. And really good views.

I see you ARE looking to climb around the Bowl. for shorter route, use that first website and then turn right at Lida/Linda Vista Rd Fork to Figueroa, then Chavy Chase, then Highland would take you back to Linda Vista, then you can turn right up toward Art Center again...and again to do the hills. Starting from Linda Vista/Lida intersection, it is about 1.8 miles to the top on Figueroa Street. do it under 10 mins would be a good goal. do it under 9 is getting hard...do it under 8 would be great!
the reverse of this route starting from Rose Bowl and then Linda Vista, Highland, Figueroa....would be A FLATTER CLIMB. Much easier if you and your mate doesn't climb much normally.
I'm on the mtn bike now on sunday, or else i can take you on the ride.

+1 on all of this.
And, Gary, I don't have much more to add except that once you get familiar with the canyons, there are steeper climbs up in there including Inverness when leads to St. Katherines. If you decide to climb Chevy Chase, you'll get good training in for sure, just be on the look out for cars. They can and do ride to close to the right (at least in my experience). And should you and your wife ever ride over there in the evening, watch out for deer - they run out into the road quite often, so I descend at a slower pace than normal when riding at dusk or in the dark. :)

St. Kats is good. I like that. And on the other side St. Aug. Both good. I had a dog run out after me on Inverness last time I was there. I rode as fast up that street like I was going down the other side!

+1 on Inverness and St. Katherine. What I like to do is just do laps, by starting at the Rose Bowl, climbing up Salvia Canyon, Inverness, St. Katherine, Chevy Chase, then drop into the bowl ... that's one lap. Do it 10 times, and you'll be a billy goat.
