Here's my Sun EZ Sport AX (aluminum) with a Crystalyte 405 front hub kit.

I just got it all assembled and wired this morning and went for my first test ride this afternoon. The kit came with a 48 volt SLA battery pack, 35A controller, e-brakes, and a thumb throttle. As you can see from the picture I still need to dress the wires and cables. In addition I have to permanently mount the controller and adjust the brakes as well as make a bunch of other minor adjustment.

The installation wasn't too difficult, but I ran into a couple of problems. With the new front wheel/hub, I find that the wheel is closer to the right side of the fork than the left side. No amount of fiddling corrected the problem and the hub spindles are fully set into the dropouts. I have been able to re-tension the front brake springs to make the brake work, but I'll have to find a better solution next week. Earl Witcher at the Poweride Store suggested that I adjust and tighten all of the spokes on the left side, but I'm not sure that will do the trick.

The other problem I encountered was the battery charger burned up shortly after I plugged it in. Earl is sending me another one, so in the meantime I'll have to curtail my check rides so I don't run the battery down.

Performance wise, the bike exceeds my expectations. On the level with full throttle and hard peddling it goes faster that I am comfortable with in my neighborhood. After I charge the battery I'll put my GPS on the bike for a true measurement, but my gut tells me that I've already broken 30 MPH.

Congrats on the speed, hopefully your GPS will verify that. As for the wheel centering, does it have any visible dish?

Here's a picture of my E-Bent with the installation complete.

Today I took it out on a one hour shake-down cruise and it worked fine. During a moderate speed run I was radar checked at 27 MPH. I could have easily gone much faster, but there wasn't enough room to do it safely. Also there were lots of landscaper trucks and pedistrians in the area, so I decided to save the speed runs for someplace that is clear with long flat straight aways. One issue that concerrns me is that when you hit a bump or pot hole at that speed the bike has a tendancy to get airborne. My preferance is to have both tires on the ground at all times. Maybe getting a recumbent with suspension would have been the way to go.

Most of the cruise was between 16 and 17 MPH. I added enough power on uphill grades to maintain that speed. The only problem that I had was the chain came off (no fault of the e-power kit) but when I put the bike on the kick-stand to fix the chain it fell over and the battery case came off. From now on I am going to use bungee cords in addition to the velcro straps that how the case to the luggage rack.

The thumb throttle takes a little getting used to because it not spring loaded to return to idle like on a motorcycle throttle. However, the e-brakes work nicely and just a light squeeze on the brake handles disengages the e-drive.

After a one hour ride today it took three hours to recharge the battery and I did notice that the charger gets quite warm/hot when in use. I'm going to watch this closely because the first chaarger I had went up in smoke. Does anyone have a suggestion for a reliable 48v charger? I think the one I got with the kit needs to go.
