-i am thinking about gettign a new carbon fork. how much will this effect how my bike rides? i have a threaded headset setup right now but so will i have any problems switching over to a threadless setup if i replace the fork and headset? also how do i know what size fork i need 1" or 1 and 1/8.
-i know the problem with dura ace bottom bracket is that the bearings are exposed and require more maitenece. is there any other drawbacks to dura ace. do you think the minimal weight saved between dura ace and ultegra is worth the price?
I would say most likely since you have threaded fork on a road bike it is 1", you cam measure the fork steerer to be positive. To go threadless just replace the headset and fork and you are all set, and you will need to get a new stem, since the current one is designed for a threaded fork. You could also get a threaded fork they are not as common but still out their. I'm assuming you currently have a steel fork, biggest difference will be weight saving, since steel absorbs road vibration fairly well. I just did this on one of my bikes, probably 90% psycological but just feels better to me.
kev is right.. just replace the headset and stem if you are going threadless..
Of course, there are threaded carbon forks.. But these forks come with an aluminum steerer.
Benefits of carbon forks? Well, its lighter and absorbs shocks better as compared to steel and aluminum.
Downside of Carbon? Careful, don't scratch them........

The Dura Ace bottom bracket while good, requires much more care to set it up properly, and more maintenance than the Ultegra. The Ultegra is a tiny bit heavier, quite a bit less expensive, much easier to install and requires no maintenance. If you ride in water or rain, the Ultegra is totally superior, therefore a much better value. More bang for your buck!
