View Full Version : Heart burn question
Been noticing when I drink straight water while riding, I get heartburn, even after waiting 3 hours after eating.
When I drink something like Gatorade, there is no discomfort whatsoever no matter how much I drink. Any ideas what may be going on?
Thanks..knotty
Sports drinks like Gatorade have special chemicals in them that prevent nausea from occurring. That's why it's marketed as a sports drink (in addition to the nutrients in it).
You know when you're really going all out and you start to feel sick - like after running a race? The chemicals in the drink are there to prevent that from happening. This is also a reason why Gatorade is a good drink to drink when you are sick with something like th flu - it helps to prevent you from being sick.
Water just doesn't have these properties and doesn't reduce nausea.
Might have something to do with it.

Gatorade contains no special anti nausea chemicals. It is salted sugar water with a little color and flavoring.
However, water has essentially no buffering capacity so the addition of a small amount of acid results in a dramatic change in pH. Carbohydrate/electrolyte solutions have a significantly larger buffering capacity and will resist pH changes. Furthermore, the carbohydrates and electrolytes raise the osmolality of the solution allowing the drink to be absorbed faster by the gut; reducing “backup” of rapidly consumed fluids.

Heartburn: have you ever tried drinking aloe vera juice? Not during a ride, but maybe before a ride.
Thanks all, I'll be trying other sports drinks too besides Gatorade. The local healthfood store carries aloe vera juice, I'll try it Garfield.

where are you getting the water ?
try filtered water, it just could be an artifact of tap water. i know that tap water is safe, but bogus, but when i use the pur filter, i can drink that water all day long....
This is water I fill up at home, also from fountains along the way, they both cause heartburn, most of the time the heartburn is fairly mild but, if it's too close to when I ate last, it gets pretty bad.
Noticed with I take a Pepsid acid reducer just before starting off, many times it greatly reduces the heartburn.
I can try a filter, I have one of those that fit on the end of the faucet.

oh hey if you take acid reducer, just take tums. tums can help increase endurance after 2 hours
(the calcium helps...just don't worry why -fills the ion pumps in muscles- but it does) so if you do any type of relief, use tums. in fact on big long rides of 4 or more hours I'll pop 3 tums then hit the road. when i do this I can dig deeper
between hours 3 and 5...usually.

I also get heartburn, but I use filtered water and I usually pop some tums right when I get home.
Do you get heart burn frequently or do you just get it on bike rides?
You could take a antacid for your heart burn on the bike. It has the benefit of acting immediately. For mild acidity, they are quite effective.
If that does not work, you might think of taking an acid blocker like Pepcid before going on the ride.
Hi Pat, I never get even the slightest heartburn off the bike, it's only when I get riding and take that first drink of water. The heartburn is especially bad if I ride right after eating, say within 30 minutes. If I wait 3 or more hours after eating, the heartburn is just very slight or none. (if I eat while riding, no problem at all) If I drink something like Gatorade instead of water, no heartburn whatsoever. I'll try the filtered water as suggested and some other type of sports drink too. Yes, I take a Pepsid just before riding and that helps a lot.
