Introductions - Hello from Raleigh (the place not the bike)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Introduction: Yorkshire-American living in Raleigh, NC, because someone has to. Been cycling on and off 30 years: time trials, triathlon and now developing a love for mountain biking.

Standard? Just got my first SPDs and shoes…. Does that say it all?

Riding: grown-up sons cast off Giant Rincon (2000 model)

Where: I ride in Umstead State Park and Du-Pont National Forest, NC’s great new MTBing treasure. Also give the deer ticks something to laugh at Lake Crabtree County Park.

Standard: way above my competence level.

Loves: Stitching wheels, almost all the rides from Reasonover Road, writing long introductions.

Hates: use of the word ‘epic’ unless someone in the party dies, AMBA (Asheville branch) aerosoling trails in Pisgah National Forest fluorescent orange, manufacturers who won’t tell us how to repair their products, people who write long introductions.

You wouldn't originally be from Scagglethorpe, would you?

Seriously, did you ride in Yorkshire, or have you developed your love of cycling whilst in the US?

It sounds as if you have far too close an acquaintance with those deer ticks, but it also seems that you are enjoying yourself other than that (small) detail :D .

Welcome to BF!

Scagglethorpe? I had to look that up on a map. Its near to Heckmontwistle, but 100 years earlier.

No I am from S Yorkshire but I spent most of my life in Cumbria where I cycled in the fells, and enjoyed mountain triathlons in the Lake District.

Mountain triathlons in the Lake District sounds like a lot of fun!

Some of the ancestors (see the genealogy in my signature) were from Scagglethorpe, hence the question.
I would agree, near to Heckmontwistle, but 100 years earlier...

Welcome! How is the riding in Humpstead park? My boyfriend lives close to there and I've been trying to get him to check it out.

Humpstead is .....errrr. interesting. Dirt roads have just had 'better' dirt put down on them. Mainly the riding in hard to loop, but it can be done. Start from the Glenwood side and use it as a warm up and cool down to doing the more technical loops in Crabtree Park up to which it abuts.

You can get a couple of hours of flatish, fast riding out of it. People take road bikes in on skinny tires these days.

I my humbly opinion its Humpstead - Crabtree - Beaverdam in order of enjoyment and scope. Beaverdam is certainly The Place.
