Can I use this as the excuse as to why I can't drop the 12 pounds I've gained over the last year? :p

No, because I said by the end of the week the body balances itself out. Unless your body is out-of-balance :D

I think that's a no-brainer. :p

Thanks ME and Lee...he's down to being up 5lbs as of this morning. I am just very curious about what caused this, how we can prevent it, etc.

Did this not happen the last time George did the 508?

No this did not happen after last year's 508. Nor has it happened to this extent after any other Ultra. I am getting down slowly everday. Tuesday was the worst the swelling in my legs was so extreme that my skin hurt being stretched that much so quickly. I actually had cankles. No swelling or bloating in my upper body just my legs. It seemed all 15 pounds of fluids were in my legs. It hurt to bend them at the knee and I could feel the weight of the extra fluids as I walked. It is the strangest reaction I have ever experienced during a recovery from an Ultra. I extreme nature of the 508 fixed gear I'm sure contibuted to this unusual hyper-compensation as part of my recovery.

Take two large burritos and call me in the morning.

You sure it's not sodium-related?

:roflmao:

This reminds me of when we were all sitting around after the Encinitas ride last January and you, Matt, told George, "You're on my turf now. And I want you to EAT!" ;)

Very few people can hang with my training regimen. If the burrito repeats don't crack them, the cheese whiz intervals usually do.

Well, all I have to say is...last time I saw you, you were super fit and trim, so that burrito and cheese whiz diet is sure working for ya. ;)

Nice job. Was this intentional?

Calories consumed: 10,774
Calories expended: 27,100

I know nothing about ultra-endurance events. Are deficits like that unavoidable, or did he have trouble consuming enough? (I'm not all the way through, so forgive me if this is covered and I haven't seen it yet.)

Hey Vance thanks for checking in.

10,774 Cal /45 hours ~240 Calories. The target was 250 calories per hour. (There will always be a deficit, that's what is so impressive of ultra athletes)

It was almost perfect for the intensity required to ride the Fixed Gear. I was not able to fuel on some of the climbs because I was standing the whole way and could only sit down and sip occasionally on the climbs. THEN on the descents I couldn't do my typical fueling where I drink a bottle and at least a gel at the top and then "digest" on the descent. On the FG I had to spin at such high cadences that whatever I put in my stomach would bounce around too much. Furthermore, my heart rate (read intensity), instead of "resetting" as is common with coasting on multi-speed would be higher than it was while I was climbing.

In addition, last year I took on too many calories for breakfast and the first few hours. This year I had a very light breakfast (yogurt, bagel, banana and bottle of liquid fuel). The plan was light fueling while intensity was high and slowly increase the calories as my intensity decreased based on fatigue and terrain conditions. I didn't feel hungry and had a very consistent level of energy. Brandy did an incredible job managing my nutrition and supplements. And not only did she do a great job feeding me she documented ALL the nutrition for the 45 hours. Thanks to her I was able to do the charts.

I encourage riders that wish to do ultras to read this article.

http://www.e-caps.com/za/ECP?PAGE=ARTICLE&ARTICLE.ID=1273 under the heading of:

Improper Amounts of Calories

"Recommendation: Intake of 240-280 calories per hour, on average, is sufficient for most endurance athletes. Lighter weight athletes (<120-125 pounds) may need less, while heavier athletes (> 185-190 pounds) may need slightly more. Experiment in training to determine your specific requirements, using 240-280 calories/hour as a base to work from. If you fall behind on your average calorie intake, do not consume excess calories to bring your average back up. "

Thanks for the explanation, George. I always have a hard time sticking with my calorie strategy on climbing rides... and I hadn't thought about how that is always a challenge on a FG ride.
