So I'm a little jealous of the people who got the iro track frame on group buy with good tubing. How do group buys usually get organized and when do you think the next one will be? Soon? ;)

Why dont you guys hit up Bikes Direct guy and see what deals he could work out, granted its not the best quality stuff but it be amazingly cheap

I think it'd be cool to have a group buy every month with different companies. but I might be dreaming. :)

I was going to suggest the same thing. Bikes Direct pretty regularly organizes group buys for their frames through BF, just usually for something fancy and carbon, but I'd wager they be down if we got another 300-500 people to buy a Kilo TT. I mean, the cost of the frameset they were selling on eBay was already equal to what we paid for the IRO, so imagine what a bulk discount would get us.

As for quality, all three of the Bikes Direct frames are basically the same as the IRO we all got (Taiwanese frame, standard 4130 tubing, etc.), so that's no reason to be put off.

kilo tt's are already cheap enough. I was thinking a real track bike that you can be proud of -- something that makes a discount worthwhile. :)

um, there is no "iro track frame". just go for the current group buy, it's supposed to be a sweet frame.

Why do you think the Rob Roy wouldn't be a great bike? I wish I has waited to pick one of those up instead of the first group buy.

If you want to get a group buy going, contact a manufacturer.

data

rob roy is great for what it is. but I want a track bike, not a bike with two protruding outlets for brakes and longer geometry. It took me a while to convince myself not to get it. :( I'd rather spend my money on something I really want. I'll contact a manufacturer, but I'm probably not the most qualified or experienced person to organize something like that. I'll certainly try if no one else steps up.

i grow to hate my "bfssfgiro" or whatever frame more and more every day i'm forced to have it as my only bike... and i have no plans to go home anytime soon. ****, i'm probably riding 50-75 miles a week less than usual these days.

in fact, data, wanna buy my frame?

http://wellthathappened.com/newbike.jpg

shipping may be a pain in the ass, but we could work something out. i'l even throw in the duraace headset, campy bb (perfect chainline) ttt stem and bull**** seatpost.

I don't know what qft means, and I'm not suggesting it has to be an iro. But I am suggesting it should be track geometry, and I think most people would agree with that.

The last group buy was for a frame that would be competitive on a track? Right?

Not particularly. It is a nice frame, but I think you might be making more of it in your mind than is reasonable.

im down for a kilo tt groupbuy but the group buy would need to be really cheap.
Bikeisland already sells the kilo tt frame for $145 with free shipping. http://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_STOR20.cgi?Action=Details&ProdID=629

I'm guessing the KiloTTBD groupbuy would need to be sub $145 WITH fork to attract people.
Is $100 possible? If it was $100 I would most definitely jump at it.

Someone should contact BD and ask him how much he needs to sell at what price in order to make the profit that's worthwhile. Maybe we should make an equation?

[(groupbuy price) - (mfg price of bike)] * (# of buyers) = (% profit)
?

The problem with a BD group buy as that they already sell bikes and frames for as cheap as they possibly can. Basically you are already getting a GB price from them. I highly doubt you'll get them to come down very much for a group buy..maybe 5% if anything, but not much more or they would be taking a loss.
Group buys work best with smaller operations, such as IRO, who make more of a profit from each individual sale and can drop their price a lot more if making a high volumes sale and still turn a profit. The group buy strategy works best with the small-timers.

I already have a bareknuckle, but I think an attempt at an EAI Bareknuckle group buy would be a really good idea. Go through one of the dealers, like thebikebiz or businesscycles, and see if you can negotiate a price for a volume purchase.

BFSSFGKTTBDGB!!! no logos, standard color options, just a good cheap blank frame and fork.

They just completed a CF road bike frame group buy, and we saved about 15%. But this was an offer on the "first" shipment of these new frames; not sure what Mike might work up for existing inventory, but might be work asking.

If you ask me, saving 15% on a $150 frame isn't worth waiting 4-6 months for.

brassknuckle GB? at least it's cheaper.

I'm totally down for a kilo TT with fork buy. I'd buy at least 2. I dig the Fleur de Lis sticker, though.

Interesting. Can you explain why?

too flexy (thought it was cause 'm a pretty heavy dude, until my sub 150lb friend said the same thing after riding it) + weird geometry (slack + low toptube + long wheelbase, yet there's still a ton of toe overlap). doesn't help that i made the mistake of going with a threaded fork (i'd probably dig it more if i could test some bar/stem combinations on the cheap/without doing a bunch of work). cheap paintjob (which sucks because, i think the color is the best thing about the bike).

pretty nice bike for long rides (i'll probably throw a freewheel and road drops on it at some point), but not great for city riding, IMO.

the funny thing is nobody agrees with me. guess i'm crazy, but i honestly think people are all into it because IRO's got street cred & they look nice.

Why not do a group buy for something decent like a Bob Jackson? Or even an EAI Barenuckle.
