Mountain Biking - OMG! My bike is too Bling Bling for the dirt!

So, I decided to build my own bike.

3 months have past and I am now $2,890 deep into it. Here is what I have so far...

2007 Specialized Stumpjumper Pro frame - $ 1,275
2008 Fox Talas RLC fork- $660
Thomson Elite X4 Stem - $83
Specialized S-Works carbon handle bar - $62
Mavic Crossmax SLR wheelset - $810

then another $1,500 or so (all high end stuff) to complete the bike. Grand totalling around $4,500. I'm afraid that this will turn into a paved-only mountain bike. I wouldn't want it to get dirty. It'll be like those Hummers that never go off-road. I don't know if I want to cry or rejoice.

Though, it is fun as long as I don't look at the numbers... i think.

mine is the same,a lot of money and scared of the dirt ^^ (at the beginning)
just get over it and Ride !!,you will enjoy it and specially you will enjoy cleaning it afterwords.
why some people spend so much money on there bikes ? because they only want the best gear there is because they will be riding much smoother,more confident on there bike and it wont brake that easely like cheap stuff.
Do like i did,put transparent protective stickers on parts of the bike where u think stones will hit the frame,branches that scratches you fox and where mud will be stiking on to the frame,this way your shure it's safe to ride hard ^^.

I'll have to do that with my frame that I postponed the build on.

I crashed my cheap new build up on my first ride with it, figured I should go ahead and get the bike used to my "skills". :D

Tuazdog - how you coming along at tuning your 08 Talas RLC? I'm having a heck of a time getting mine dialed in. That's what I get for being a roadie / xc geek. As for the price, wish I would have gotten off that cheap. :o

My HT is 6 years old and has seen quite a few upgrades because I wore the ever lovin' **** out of some very good parts and needed to replace them.

We've both been scraped and scuffed up in our adventures and I wouldn't have it any other way because my bike looks like a bike and not a garage queen.

Just go and ride it like you stole it.

Tuazdog - how you coming along at tuning your 08 Talas RLC? I'm having a heck of a time getting mine dialed in. That's what I get for being a roadie / xc geek. As for the price, wish I would have gotten off that cheap. :o

I haven't done anything to it yet. I still need to figure out how long I want the steerer tube to be. Once my headset and tires arrive, I'll probably start assembling the bike but as of right now, all my parts are laying under my bed. I got the fork in eBay, new.

Yes, that is what this bike is turning out to be... a full suspension bike for the road. lol. I even ordered slicks to put on my Crossmax SLRs knowing that it won't see dirt. Well, at least in its first few months. I'll probably commute to work with it for a bit. It's a nice paved trail along the coast about 7-8 miles long. then we will see.

Pansies! On my second ride on the new MotoLite, my friends were asking when I was going to get the new bike. :lol: Straddle that rolling pile of debt and get it dirty!

Oh, I shouldn't mention this, but with regard to the TALAS, I ordered an '07 on closeout and they shipped me an '08 by mistake. ~$525.00 + tax, IIRC. :D

You should probably put carbon fibre fenders and a ti kickstand on it too.

And don't forget the ti/carbon fibre bell and spokey dokes.

A friend of mine dropped 10 k on a custom built Moots that was equipped with every bit of Moots Ti swag available as well as a Rohloff hub.

This bike never sees asphalt.

I would have to agree with MIN. There is no point spending $4k on hooker in Vegas unless you are planning on riding her. So, why should your bike be any different. Take up collecting paintings or start a wine collection. Don't dress up to look like a gangster unless you plan on being one.
Trust me, if you really use your bike, your doctor bills will be alot more then the cost of your bike and if you have health insurance to cover this big bill, you will feel like your saving money by destroying it. This is called motocross/hockey logic. After more then 30 broken bones, misc skin grafts, and other fun stuff, your bike is the smallest of your worries. Happy riding...

$8000 on that build sounds pretty true. Except the fact that the frame is Stumpjumper Pro not S-Work. S-Work full bike loaded XTR, RLC, SLR is $7100 + tax at my LBS. Building bike is always more $ then complete bike. So 8k sounds like a reasonable value for that bike. Of course, you can't sell it for 8k and you will never get it back. 8k on those parts on that frame isn't cheap! that is all I can say! I can grap one on sale for same parts for $5500 tax included if I hunt around.

No, the $8K quote came from the guy with the Elsworth bike. I don't know anything about that bike but that is way out of my price range. I'm not that financially stable to blow off 8K in one season. I quote myself around 4.5K when completed. It's still a huge amount of money but disbursed several months doesn't hurt as bad.

So far, my bike is on track to come out better equipped than a fully setup 07 Stumpjumper Pro for about the same price. It will have S-Works Stumpy Carbon parts (minus the frame). I'm happy with that. My only concern is warranty since I am leaning towards getting most parts through the cheapest place... which is ebay. ya, that and the dirt...

Bike as pictured probably is $6500 of parts but I got spare parts around for the inevitable breakage, different courses, etc.

Take it out in the dirt and just push it over,, once it has its first scratch it feels ok,, I've dropped all my dirtbikes(not always on purpose) before I got them out on the trail..

Here ya go, this is the $8,000 bike I built up this year. It's awesome in the rock gardens, proof that the whole 29'er thing isn't just a fad. However, in a way I think it may be a little too blingy for the dirt. :D

So custom length? So what, every wheel set I have built I have had to "custom cut" the spokes. Same price as any other spoke. Or are yours like gold plated?

8k on that Ellsworth is a true value but you are buying everything there at MSRP. I can hunt around LBS and on9BS and can save 25% for sure.
