Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Seeing bikes stolen/stolen bikes

My city has high bike theft. Gradually as i start to value my bike more and more as an extention of me i find myself getting angrier an angrier at bikes being stolen and seeing people on stolen bikes.

What do you guys do? I've had two instances in particular lately that have been making me wonder if i should have said something.

Earlier today when i went to the grocery store i watched a security guard let 3 kids ride off on two unlocked bikes after they walked up shadily and he asked if they were his. When he let them ride off they looked back laughing and yelled 'ha boy these aint ours' to him and he smiled.

Before that some days before i watched an older guy hop on a purple cannondale built for someone 5 foot 1 when he was pushing 6 to top it off the bars were flipped up leaving the brakes and index shifters in an impossible position to use well.

both times i've found myself leaving agrivated, wishing i'd said something to at least defend that owners now lost bike

You mean like Bum Bars? Bums are not so picky when it comes to bikes that fit them. Granted I'm sure their bikes are originally stolen to begin with, but maybe it was really his?

savannah has a high rate of bike theft? who would've thought.


you should try to organize a bike network of sorts in your town (if you don't already have one.)

create a website or a message board, put flyers up around town, get in the newspaper and let cyclists know that there's a resource for them to post bike info, and stolen bike pictures, etc.

I foiled a bike theft the other night. was walking my girl home and there was a van parked across the street and a dude in it, and some clanging sound coming from what sounded like inside the van. we crossed over once we passed it, and looking back down the sidewalk I could see a guy ****ing with a bike locked to a rack. the van was parked shielding it from the street. I stopped and looked for a bit till I was sure what he was doing, then yelled "HEY!" real loud. the dude jumped back in the van and his buddy drove off immediately. I stopped by the bike and it was locked well but they had almost gotten away with the quick release wheel. I left a note on the bike telling them what happened and that it was a dumb place to lock up overnight.

because i had someway to proove they wern't they're bikes i mean cut me some slack are you expecting i'd chase down 3 dudes on bikes?

and yeah they were dumb for locking but doesn't it say a lot that we should have to lock up in the firstplace obviously somethings wrong.

totaly going to do this from now on.

I have a house in Savannah. We had two bikes stolen from Parkers down town, while we were inside. Luckily the cops caught them and we got our bikes back. But my brand new Raleigh "one way" was just stolen from my garage, and so pissed off I don't know what to do.

you could always put a tracker inside the frame?

what products are there for that sort of thing?

I read another forums post about that and they seemed to say nothing was available that wasn't thousands of dollars or something

Yeah, the only ones I've heard of are more law enforcement level things like Pegasus Technologies or Neroglobal. The latter was used by the local university campus to deter bike thefts using bait bikes. Not exactly DIY technology. There's some guy on instructables.com that demoed wiring a stun gun to a mobile phone to shock bike thiefs. Downside is you have to watch a video with him shirtless. Totally hideous.

i bring my bike inside wherever i go...even in my parents neighborhood where there is 0 theft...i don't leave it on the porch, i bring it inside the house

This it the reson my every day bikes all have nuts with lock washers on them you can get them tighter than ****, and chain big thick chain.

Don't judge too harshly on that. Various situations have found me riding my girlfriend's bike around the city.

The sole problem is that I'm 6'6" and anyone that knows anything about bike sizing could tell I'm lying.

Sure, if they considered the fact that it could be a loaner bike or a gf bike then maybe it would work, but if they put that much thought in I'd doubt they're the bike stealing type anyway.
