I did the People Powered Ride in Goleta yesterday.

Both of my riding partners did the Lighthouse Century last week. Mark had a hip replacement in May, so if anyone ever says you can't ride with a hip replacement, point them my way. Mark is planning on doing RAAM next year with a team of hip replace-ees, sponsored by the maker of the hip implants.

Back to the ride. 43 degrees at the 7am start. Began on rolling terrain with a strong tailwind, making for effortless 30+ mph on the flatter sections. My fanny pack would hang up on my saddle, so I ditched that at the first stop, along with my cool weather gear (the temps rose quickly as the sun came up.)

The first 50 was pretty tame. Then there was an 8 mile, very bumpy section that led to Harris Grade (1500 ft climb?) with a nice DH section. The last 40 were grueling as most of the roads were extremely bumpy, causing us to joke that PPR stood for a variation of Paris-Roubaix. Punishing Paris-Roubaix without the cobblestones.

The last rest stop was only 10 miles from the finish, which we thought was kind of silly until we got back out on the course. Again, bumpy was the norm, but add in a stiff headwind and a slight uphill grade. Our speed averaged less than 10mph to the finish, with a very intense climb at the end.

Finished in 5:35, and felt without the headwinds at the end, we would have been more like 5:20.
I won't do this ride again unless the asphalt Zamboni makes a pass at the horrible roads. I'll do Lighthouse next year, as I heard that was awesome.

Thanks for the report on this ride, DM. :) 43 is pretty darn chilly to start in! And, yeah, the roads don't sound appealing. Too bad. Next year, DO ride the Lighthouse. It is well worth it, IMO.

Sorry to nitpick but although it was put on by the Goleta Valley Cycling Club, we were in the Santa Ynez valley, no where near Goleta.

The climb topped out at 1000 feet, starting around 300, so only about 700 foot climb.

Nice area to ride, I love it up there.I haven't done PPR in a few years, guess the roads have gotten worse. I used to belong to the Goleta Club so we could do the members only Cho Cho Century. They are fun people but not many serious riders. I'm sure they supported it well. Were the rest stop workers wearing Halloween Costumes? Each stop used to have costumes of a different theme . I don't remember Harris Grade being that bad but that climb out of Los Alamos is horrible. Can't think of the name of that road but dosen't one of the doubles go over it in the dark?

Drum Canyon, and it was bad in the spring, IIRC

Harris Grade wasn't bad. As others said you are thinking of Drum Canyon, but they actually didn't route it that way this year. And it wasn't dark when I went over it on the double :D

I actually dug it myself. I thought it was stunning to descend with the moon just coming out (and it was a full moon). I just descended slowly - almost as slowly as when I climbed the other side of it, which was at snail's pace. :p

The road surface has gotten bad, the charm is still nice, from either side

However, there are better hills around there, less traffic, no cattle guards, good roads, same moon.

There was zero traffic on it when we went over it in the spring and I don't remember cattle guards. Of course, I was giddy, so maybe I just hopped on over them!
