so i was down in ny this week end for the mash premier and i kept noticeing guys that have a tube running up through their seat raills and then back down through there seat stays with a piece of chain in it? whats the fad here or is it simply incase you break a chain you have a bunch of extra links on your bike?

It's a saddle anti-theft measure.

yep. it keeps your saddle locked up so no crack heads or dumb kids can steal it. without some effort.

I do this with an old bike chain. Drunken frat boys prey on Quick-release seats on Saturday evenings.

like any lock mechanism it can be busted with the right tools and time, in this case an exacto knife chain tool and about a minute and a half are what it will buy you.

just saying this because people should know that while it's smart for 5 minute trips to the grocery store, it's not like this will keep your brooks titanium saddle and masterpeice seatpost around if you leave your bike out in an alley for a week.

Nothing will though. Are there any seatpost/saddle specific locks?

But still, give a good thief 20 minutes and they can take anything off the bike or more likely just take the whole bike. This type of theft prevention is for crimes of opportunity. Like the guy above said, keeping *******s from knicking your saddle for laughs.

Even the normal hex bolt would do that though, so the tube seems a bit pointless to me. I'd be surprised if a tube has ever in history succeeded in deterring a thief actually.

Doubling up any theft protection is a good idea, even if the chain isn't the most effective thing ever. I would think wrapping it in an inner tube or shrink tube would be better because then they can't stick in a screwdriver and pop the chain apart as easily.

well, as made clear by the OP, lotsa people don't know there's a BIKE CHAIN in there. if you've got the extra links kickin' around, it doesn't hurt at all. i've got a whole lot if yer interested. talk to sasha about how well this works, 'cause somebody tried to-- oh look! penguins!

The Postmaster uses a cable that inserts into the seat tube. It has a ball on the end which is placed below a long water bottle cage bolt. I doubt it's very secure, but I thought it was kinda neat. I'm sure it would at least confuse the hell out of a thief.

I was trying to find a photo of the lock and found this weird thing instead: http://www.i-lock.net/

What the hell?

The tube is to prevent the chain from scratching the frame and seat rails up. The, "it adds to theft protection" explanation is ridiculous.

hey, lotsa people don't know there's a bike chain in there! man, you know what would be even cooler to use than an inner tube?

a dead cobra.

i've considered doing that on my bike, but if a thief around here doesn't have a hex key to steal my key..he/she will have a hard time getting the seatpost out. I had to use WD-40 X213475897946597345634534-45347534080 to get that **** in there.

It also would make it more difficult to jam something like an allen key in to pop a link apart. Shrink tubing would do it best. Is that not true?
