Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - short pad on top tube in pictures

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I keep seeing this 4-5 inch pad on the top tube near the front -- what is the point of it?
To protect the frame against your handle bars swinging back? (its a good idea, I might do that)
To guard your shoulder against the frame when you pick it up?
Do you keep hitting the tt with your crotch in the exact same spot?
kashimax (sp?) gold tt protector, protects the frame from the handlebars.

I think you're seeing people who've put old BMX pads on their frames.
