Hi everyone,
My name is John. I'm 54 yrs. old and I've been seriously into bicycle touring for nearly 30 years (I dropped well over 100 lbs. of body weight in the first two years and have kept it off, by God!!!). I live in what I proudly consider to be the finest town in the world, Boulder Colorado, and bike essentially every day, usually 10-20 miles.
My longest-distance tour was as founder and leader of the "Save The Grizzlies Bike-A Thon". A promotional trip to raise public awareness of the plight of the grizzlies in Yellowstone National Park.
The trip was from Yellowstone Park's South Entrance to the Capital steps in Washington DC, June1 thru july 1, 1984 (The pics of us on the steps with Tim Worth putting on one of our promotional T-shirts made a full page-and a-half, pages A4/5 of the Washington Post).
I made the trip on a 1984 Trek 720 touring bike with Eclipse front and rear panniers & racks, all of which are now retired but still in cherry/mint condition ( I take VERY good care of my equipment).
Since then all of my tours have been solo and non-promotional.
Currently I ride a 1997 Trek 970 MTB set up for road riding with a Trek-built rigid fork w/low rider lugs, Shimano XT drivetrain, XT/XTR brake components, Chris King hubs, Rhino Lite XL rims, Wheelsmith butted spokes and Continental Town and Country tires - 2.1 rear, 1.9 front, with Specialized Airlock tubes (not one flat in over 7 years/25,000 miles!!).
When I'm on tour I use Jandd panniers with the large Jandd rear rack and a Blackburn low rider up front (the one with the connecting rod that goes from one side, around the tire, to the other). So far, this is by far the best touring system I've tried.
Regards and best wishes to all the forum members, and please, ride with pride and stay safe!!!
Cordially,
John Pafford
