Hi,

I want to get myself a hardtail MTB and was looking for some decent shops (preferably in west London but it doesn't matter) which have a good range, could advise a newbie well and allow you to test them.

Cheers,

Evans has a shop in Chiswick. They're ok but I can't tell you too much about mtn bikes as I'm a roadie.

condor cycles - quite possibly the best bike shop in london
http://www.condorcycles.com/

bikefix and brixton cycles have good reputations too

Personally wouldn't touch evans with a barge pole.

Go to DECATHLON, Surrey Quays, Canada Water on the Jubilee Line. Expert advice, best value-for-money bar none.

It's more south-west than west but I highly recommend Brixton Cycles. Very knowledgeable, very friendly. Only shop I've ever been to where they talked me out of buying a more expensive product, instead recommending a cheaper one - and they were right.

Condor and Brixton both have good reputations.

I second that. More like a supermarket but not even cheap where staff seem to be part timers. I had to tell the staff what chain is not compatible with my bike!

I meant Evans

A friend of mine owns the Cyclopedia shops in High Street Kensington and Fulham Road. I like them very much, although I might be biaised! The owner is a guy called Hanna, by all means mention that 'Bernard' recommended you, and good luck.

Anyone know what the mechanics down at Decathlon are like? I've just had my bike serviced by Evans and I'm not overly impressed with the service as after one ride I'm gonna have to take it back down for them to sort out my front mech again(just had the old one replaced with a 105).

Or any decent mechanics in the SE London area(i'm in Lewisham).
