Utility Cycling - hunting

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anybody hunt on bikes? I was talking to a guy who will go with a friend 30-50 miles into the woods on bikes to hunt *elk*, that's like 500# to tote back out. Two bikes and one trailer!

This is an interesting thought. Around here they close at least one of the major mtn biking parks a few weekends a year to allow hunting. I can not verify that anyone uses a bike to hunt (it may not even be allowed?) but they do hunt deer and i believe turkey at the mtb park.

- used to ride my 10spd out of Happy Valley w/my squirrel piece during the mid-70s... i was on food stamps at the time, and some nice pot pies were the result of such outings...
(it was sweet revenge, as i lived in a one-room sitter w/no fridge, and the rodents used to steal my food i kept outside the window during the winter)

We don't go that far, and it's for deer. But the answer is, yes.

I bowhunt on a bike.
I haul my deer, deer stand, and bow on a model 96 bikesatwork trailer.

Bikes have serious advantages over ATV's. They can get through hard scrabble and underbrush that would stop anything this side of a bulldozer. You can always dismount and walk, Vietcong style. And most of all they're a LOT quieter and don't scare off all the game in a ten mile radius. A surprising number of hunters use them.
For hauling, even 400 or 500 lbs is far from impossible. It mostly depends on how rough the terrain is.

Never bikehunted. Bike I often fishnbike. I use my panniers to hold tackle and snacks. I'll stuff a rod down the side of a bag and cycle all around a big lake or up and down the river. It's a great way to cover lots of ground/water.

Something that was pointed out to me by the local Fish and Game wardens (no, I was not in trouble) is that you do have to dismount before shooting. It is considered a vehicle.

I don't hunt but while riding off road I have come in close proximity with deer, elk, moose, bear, turkeys and pheasant. So if I was to start hunting the MB would be my vehicle of choice.

Have you tried the Shift list? You never know unless you ask...
