I hang my hat in New Mexico but make it to Dallas a few times a year to visit friends and family. I am interested to see if anyone knows if it is possible to ride from Dallas, near the White Rock Lake area down into the piney woods of East Texas to Nacogdoches. I know that I can get out of Dallas ok, following what is basically the Richardson Bike Mart south route down towards Seagoville and the Kaufman County line. From there I'm stumped.

Anyone have any good routes? I figure not too many people ever ride out that way but maybe someone reading this in Tyler, Athens, Palestine, Jacksonville could give me a couple good east-west roads through their neck of the woods and I could cobble a route together.

By car it is about 180 miles via Hwy 175.

I'm used to riding long distances and think I could probably ride it in one day without much problem.

Here's a start:

This is a route we do for the DATES Halloween ride. Starts in Kaufman. Just don't do the loop up to Van, we only do that to get in an extra 20+ miles. Stay on 2339 on into Edom. The people who go short do that. That route goes straight into the heart of downtown Tyler. Maybe you can find a way to go around and then head down toward Nacogdoches with someone else's help here.

Good luck

btw...where at in NM?

I always check out google maps when Im planning that kind of trip.
The satellite or hybrid view gives you a great idea of how wide
the roads are that you are considering.

The loop around Tyler is very unfriendly for a cyclist. AVOID!

I'd head down US 175 to Jacksonville, then 69 to Rusk, then 343 to Nac. Don't go down to Alto from Rusk, as 21 from there to Nac is very busy and has NO shoulder. The loop around Nac has a good shoulder most of the way.

HWY 175 is under construction most of the length from Eustace through Athens to Jacksonville. I know that hardly anyone rides down that way. In the past, when I have driven the route, I take HWY 204 out of Jacksonville, east towards Nacogdoches.

Thanks for the replies by the way. I appreciate them.
