i'll be posting pics of the whole paint process soon

but i was thinking: when i put my bike back together
i'm gonna need some grease. instead of going out and
buying some why don't i use the grease that's been sitting
in my fridge for the past millenia? what do you posters think?

and yes i know bacon grease would probably negate the veganism
of my synthetic leather saddle which took a long time to find...damn

thanks
jeff

Nuts...you are nuts.
I have a spare tube of Phil's I'd let you use some of. Unless you are making bacon...

I'm not sure about bacon grease, but you can always buy some wheel bearing grease from Pep Boys or whatever for a couple bucks.

If you are vegan why would you have bacon grease around anyways? Seems suspicious..

who said anything about the "v-word"?!?

oh wait I did...no not vegan, but you know I generally

While I know of a guy that used cooking oil in his engine once(It worked) when he was strapped for cash I do not reccomend this. The melting temp of cooking grease be it animal fat or vegetable is way to low. Just leaving the bike in the sun will melt the stuff. If your money is tight get some disc brake(It is not soap based and has better flow) wheel bearing grease from an auto shop. Kendall blue is great but stains everything it touches.

I just bought some white lithium grease from Ace today for repacking the headset on my bike. It ran for $3.49 for a pound of the stuff which should last you for a few years.

I say you should just buy some grease.

I wouldn't try it, you can get grease from a car shop for cheap. Bike specific grease is alot thinner than car grease though, so if yo can swing for it, go for some bike grease.

panasonic, what's the grease you got like?

Walmart sells a 1lb. can of high quality bearing lube for $2.00. We use it a lot at school for our bike restoration project. I use Park or Pedros at home but I would us the Wally Worlds stuff if funds were low or it was all I had.

I know I bought two tubes of Phil Wood grease about 6 months ago, aroudn $3.50 a piece and I still have not gone throguh it all. Specific bicycle grease is not that exenpensive, skip lunch one day.

Phil Wood is an excellent choice, however, BULL SHOT or aka Bull SNOT! Is one of the best lubes available. Creates some of the best "spider webs".

Lithium grease is a poor, poor choice for bicyle usage. Just go to a bike shop, and buy a friggin' $5 tube of Phil waterproof grease, OK?

Specifically, why is a poor choice? What makes it not suitable?

Love Bull Shot..I used that all the time at the shop in SC. We also had some Schwinn stuff that worked well.
