My friend B, an accomplished road bike rider and mountain biker was in Mammoth about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Took a very bad spill on the mountain. Drove his Femur into and through his hip bone (shattered the hip bone) and up into his abdomen.:eek: Broke his shoulder and arm. Air lifted from Mammoth airport to John Wayne Airport in the OC. A week later had a 10 hour surgery to repair the hip bone. He's home now. Probably will be in a chair for 3 to 4 months and off the leg. He was in great shape at the time and could really use some well wishes.

What I'd like to do with this thread is get a bunch of you to pass along some kind words and then I'll forward this link to him.

I'm thinking he may or may not want to remain anonymous, but never-the-less how about a BIG ole BF get well soon wish!

Sorry to hear about the crash and hope your friend heals up smoothly and completely. 10hrs under the knife is absolutely no fun and is certainly only the beginning to a long recovery. Hope he is able to keep his head up and eye on the prize at the end.

But from the way your friend describes you, you sound tough, B! You'll be healed up and out riding in no time!
Get better, rest up and speedy recovery! :)

Major Ouchies!

Your friend has a long road ahead of him. Best wishes and don't give up. People who were fit before an accident are in a good position to make a full recovery because they have the mental toughness and discipline needed to get through rehab and bounce back.

B,

I broke my femur very badly last November, and I was really scared as I had never broken a bone in my body before, despite a very active life. I underwent a 3hour surgery to fix the bone, and I hope you can benefit from my experience:

1) A very positive attitude will go a long way. Do not wallow in self-pity or depression;

2) Take your pain-killers as needed;

3) Keep a little journal or diary to document your feelings/thoughts; and finally and most importantly,

4) Focus like a laser beam on your physical therapy. I was lucky in that I have a brother who is a physician overseas, and he had given me the heads-up as to how important and crucial my PT was gonna be. Do your PT exercises religiously.

The PT was key for me. In my view, after the initial fix by the surgeon, the PT exercises were the next most important factor in my recovery.

Remember, this too shall pass. And you'll be back to your old self very soon.

Goodluck.

Regards,

Hi B--best wishes for a full and speedy recovery. You took a good spill and it will take a while to recover, but given your accomplishments as a road biker your conditioning should help out a lot.
