View Full Version : Cuda's coming to SoCal: Dinner 18th, Ride 24th
It's that time of year again, the wife and I are headed for Los Angeles to see her family for Thanksgiving. We have plans to arrive Saturday Nov. 17th and will be in town all week and leaving on Sun. 25th. I know it's a busy time for everyone and lots of traveling to and from and such, but I'd like to meet up with as many of the SoCal crew as I can while I'm out there.
First up: Food, drinks, and fun!
LOCATION: El Cholo in La Habra.
TIME: 6pm (sound good to everyone)
Next up: Any rides being organized for this time period? Perhaps a Friday morning Post-Turkey Day ride? Not sure what kind of mileage (or terrain) I'll be good for. I'm going to be off the bike till early November it looks like and Dallas, while in the south, doesn't have the year round riding weather you all enjoy.
Tenitive Plan: SFVBC Ride @ 7:30am Saturday 24th. Specific Ride TBD.

Hey, Cuda. :) I'm not sure how to answer on the weekend's rides except to say that there will be a pie ride. Other than that, I'm sure there will be rides to join on.

Is there a pie ride? Wasn't jschen supposed to get on this?
Yo, JASON! Get to it!

Whatever you do, don't say Olive Garden. They don't like that around these parts.
My lovely wife has just informed me that I had my dates all screwed up when I'll be in town. It's now corrected... :o :)

Oh heck no. We went to El Cholo last time don't you remember. I thought I was the only one who drank too much too fast on an empty(ish) stomach and had some minor blank spots in my memory that evening.

The dates are still screwed up! :p
Last year was a lot of fun, and even as a non-cyclist, I'm looking forward to meeting as many SoCal BFers as can make it. :)
I look forward to the visit!
Dan, I'll deal with the Pie ride after this weekend. Too much stuff to do this week to prepare for aprilm's visit to care about November just yet.

You should hire an assistant.
Think we could all use an assistant from time to time. For me, I need one who points out when I misspell words. Thankfully I have Google Toolbar when my wife isn't around to fill that position. :)
Is it too early now to start a list of people who will (likely) be able to make it Sunday evening (Nov. 18th), or perhaps any other evening that would work better for more people?

*raises hand* I can come. :p
Back up this thread goes now that we're a few weeks closer to when the wife and I will be heading out that direction. I know after all the recent (and still ongoing :( ) fires that some of the ride plans for around Thanksgiving have changed.
Really hoping to get a good sized group together for dinner Sunday night before Thanksgiving. Last Christmas time we had a group of I think 8 or so for a great time. That even proved just how much Margarita is too much for me. Can't promise we'll get a repeat of that this year, but should be a good time all around. :)
Ride ride ride, I've now been off the bike 90% of the time since Oct 10th and looks like I'll be back in the saddle hopefully by around the end of next week (crosses fingers the incisions will be healed enough to get a helmet on) so hopefully I'll be in reasonable good shape again for a good ride. I'm sure I mentioned already that I'm a serious flat lander and don't have and real climbing legs so go easy on me when suggesting routes!
Where in the LA area will you be based?
Woodland Hills, up in the Valley. Guess being 5 blocks from Mulholland Dr would be a trial by fire for a climbing test wouldn't it.
I will have a car, so we're fairly mobile for dinner and reasonable drive possible for the ride.
There's always PCH for a nice coastal ride with modest rollers.
PCH would be a pretty ride. I've driven parts of it in the past but forget what the shoulder situation is like for riding.
How much climbing do you want?
Nice ride would be out through Hidden Valley to Newbury Park and then looping back through Thousand Oaks. If you start in Agoura area, that's about 30 miles with roughly 1500'. No one climb is very long or difficult. So plenty of rollers with lots of flats. If we're talking about the Friday after Thanksgiving, that works for me.

That wouldn't be too bad of an option. (rough calculations in the head...) about a avg 3.5% grade for the climbing given 25% of the road being pointed up. I'm going to try hard to get my cardio back into shape over the next couple weeks. Haven't done any lengthy workouts for 3 weeks now and really feeling it now.

Cuda, I'm around that week and if possible, I'll come meet you for a ride and we can hit the Santa Monicas and PCH. I've not piped up since my plans are still up in the air, but I'd love to ride if I can! :)

Sounds great. I'm fairly flexable as far as plans go as well right now and know many people are still ironing out the plans for that week as well. Suppose I should start thinking about tracking down a bike too huh? ;)
So, who might be in for dinner Sunday 18th??
Anyone ride with the San Fernado Valley Bicycle Club (SFVBC)? Their start location at the California State University Northridge is only about 15minutes from my inlaw's apartment. They have rides in the range of milage that I'd probably be able to whip myself into shape for (30 or 40mi). I am really hurting after only about 20mi today, 3+ weeks off the bike for surgery and flu has really put me off my conditioning!!
There are quite a few people around here that run with the SFVBC and I hear that the rides are pretty good.
I should be able to attend a dinner on the 18th, so count me in!
Sounds great Extort. Now to pick a place and round up more of the SoCal crew. :) We did Mexican last time, anyone have any suggestions?

El Cholo on the 18th? I'm in for that one, as long as it's not too late.:)
(I don't like driving late/sleepy from a Mex meal!)
If El Cholo is the vote again, I'm sure the wife and I will be more than happy to return there. This time I'm either A) going to stop after one Margarita, or at least B) wait more than 2 minutes inbetween!!!

Yup, we'll be doing the La Habra location. El Cholo it is then. Suggestions for a time? Happytime mentioned earlier would be better for her. Happyfeet and I should be pretty flexable on time as well.

Hope you're able to make it out mateo (and everyone else who has posted or just lurking in the thread!)

I may just do that. Thanks! I assume this is a "show up if you can" thing, with no reservations or anything else I'll screw up if I say I may come and then don't?
Something like that. I'd like to try to get a rough head count by a day or two ahead so we know what size table to get when we get there. But we won't send anyone after you if you can't show at the last minute.

Only for the last 50 years or so. I remember going there when I was a kid.

Well, just shy of a year, last time we were out there between Christmas and the new year. This time around it is Thanksgiving weekend.
5 days till Cuda and HappyFeet invade SoCal! 6 days till the dinner at El Cholo!! Looking forward to meeting everyone!

I can't do Sunday either...they are still in town. :o
Yup, dinner is Sunday. Sorry you won't be able to make it merider. Hopefully I'll still be able to get a ride in later in the week while I'm out there. I think my cleat position got screwed up when I had them replaced recently and have a hell of a stiff hip and knee as a result this week after this past weekend of riding. Going to try to get in to have them repositioned before Saturday morning.
