General Cycling Discussion - Reason to have 3 bikes

I just checked out my bikes. IT's 12 AM. Two of three bikes have rear flats. Don't feel like repairing them at this hour. The club ride is at 7:30 am.

The only good reason to have three bikes is you're waiting for the fourth to be built.

actually we do have a fourth. But, it is mostly my wifes. A city bike for tooling about the home town. Much too heavy for a group ride up the mountains.

p.s. here's a possibly helpful hint: i always keep a spare wheelset ready to go w/fresh tubes and tires.. this has saved the bacon a couple of times, not so much for flats, but popped spokes...

There is no such thing as too many bikes, too many spare wheels, or in my case too many helmets. At somepoint I am always grateful I had them around to trip over.

Threes not too bad. Im only 22 and have quite a few already.

Yeah, we barely scrape by. Fortunately, while I have a paying internship, I'm working on acquiring my 4th and 5th before I get poor again!

Bikes are like jeans, regardless of how many you get, you always end up having a favorite that you ride all of the time. This is what always makes me wonder why i don't pare down.

Come to the conclusion on my Klein. It's the rim tape. Will do little good to continually repair the tube. the leaks of late always face the rim. The tape is looking a little compressed. Tomorrow, when I have more time, I am gonna ride it to the shop and putchase some new rim tape.

To be sure, I have no idea why I have so many bikes, I have three that I ride regularly, and two that I keep around pretty much for space filler, Plus there are a couple that I'm not even sure who they belong to any more.

She keeps saying I will, but she doesn't . She insists upon having a 'girls bike." It is practical for about town rides.

What I don't understand is how you have bikes at home with flats. If I get a flat, it has to be fixed before the bike gets home. It's not like I'm going to ride on a flat or carry the bike home and walk.

I think it was a slow leak on my touring bike, shider. that bike I think the rear tire need be replaced. Enough of the thread was gone, that small punctures in the crevices, worked its way thru until small punctures developed in the tubes. As to my race bike. I think the rim strip need be replaced. On both bikes slow leaks allowed me to get home ok. But, the next day slow leaks allowed them to go flat.

City Bike! I have a town bike. REI Randonnee, but I couldn't hack the drops. I got a moustach handlebar and it's now a city bike.

I'm down to 4 bikes myself (The Boy keeps offering me his, though, so maybe I really have 5? But I'm not much of a fan of full-suspension mountain bikes) - but I always end up riding the same one, my trusty Raleigh city bike. Maybe once I get racks on ALL of the bikes so I don't have to rummage around trying to find the comfy backpack or the larger panniers or the handlebar bag that fits THIS bike but not THAT one... this morning was an exercise in frustration as I tried to switch bikes!

1. 1985 Raleigh men's frame 5 speed, with rear rack and super comfy saddle: the go-to bike for commuting and errands, but not really a wise winter choice given the steel rims!! I suppose the fenders are a bit redundant given that I don't ride this one in the wet, but I hear enough little rocks going PING that I'm happy enough to keep them on. I don't like rocks in my face. I like how tall I am on this bike - I can see really well in traffic and I feel I am pretty visible.

2. 1985-ish Japanese built steel tourer with 26" rims, needs front and rear racks: my go-fast bike, and the one I'd like to use for more commuting when it's not too snowy or wet. One day I would like it to go randonneuring with me! May need fenders.

3. 1985 Raleigh ladies' frame, 6 speed, with rear rack: This bike is lovely. She needs a front basket and some wire panniers so she can go on neighbourhood errands. She's noticeably slower than the other Raleigh. Tires are in perfect shape despite being original stock!

4. Mid 90s really ugly green Norco mountain bike with knobby tires: needs fenders and rear rack, destined to be bad-weather winter commuter. Currently has two flats, rats!! (Slow leak since I checked it over last spring) There's some rust in the drivetrain but I'll replace it all in the spring. At some point this one will become an Xtracycle, I hope.

Really I need at least two more bicycles, for very good reasons which I am sure I will think of very soon. :D

1= you need the folder to fold
2= the racer to race
3= the MTB for the bush
4= the recumbent to tour
5= the beachbike for the salt
6= the beater to go to coffee
7= well it's a nice old bike
8= and so is this one
9= well you need to see if you like a long recumbent more then a short one
10= O well there must be a Reason to have 3 more bikes

I am taking my race bike to the bike shop presently. I am sure the problem with the slow leak is compressed rim strips. I see little bumps in the tube where the rubber conforms to the curveiture of the sunken rim tape.

Really I need at least two more bicycles, for very good reasons which I am sure I will think of very soon. :D

Because my wife won't let me have more.

My reason to have 3 bikes is to try and catch up to how many my wife has. I actually have 4 though. She has 5. For now that is...

My good one is my weekend long ride bike that only goes out in nice weather. My other one is an entry level roadie which is my everyday 35km commuter. Damn, that's only two. I need another one for higher performance commuting which would relegate my old roadie to wet-commute days only. Maybe in the spring...

Don't feel bad if you only have 2 or 3 bikes, I only have 1 :(. But I am buying another late this winter or early this spring, and I have a frame to do a build that I'll start as soon as I get the 2nd one. Anyone want to make some donations? The money Live 8 raised still hasn't reached me :D
