Hi all, i'm about to strip/repaint my scratched to hell stumpjumper (M4) and was wondering if the bare aluminium needed any prep/treatment before the primer coats? (aside from degreasing etc..)
It's just that i remember reading something about opening the pores, and not doing so results in paint falling off like a week later:eek:

Cheers

you should get it powder coated, it would hold up good

I'd love to mate, but i'm a bit poor right now :(
Just going for a simple black semi stealth job with some cheeky s-works decals ;)

Then again, i just called a local company and they strip and powdercoat for £45-50!
Sounds like i don't have to poison myself and wait weeks for paint to harden :)

i just assumed it would cost nearer to £100 or more...

Good call Dicky.

I pointed out the cost of powder was comparable with a home spray can job when you considered everything in another post and had an avalanche of spraycan sniffers dump on me.

Yeah, if you consider the added mess, hassle and waiting times etc, it doesn't really make sense if you only want a single colour. (all assuming you do a proper job - Stripping, sanding, priming, sanding, multiple coats + clearcoats etc) Not to mention the added durability of powdercoating.

Then again, I s'pose you could argue that the satisfaction and added creative potential you get from a good DIY job could outweigh the above.
Personally, if I cared that much I'd get it professionally sprayed.
Dr. D, I wish...
