Track Cycling: Velodrome Racing and Training Area - campy crank/bottom bracket help!

ok so i have the old fluted 151 bcd campy record track cranks. a while back they started creaking on my dura ace bottom bracket. lbs told me it was because of spindle differences. so i replaced it with a new sealed campy bottom bracket. worked great for months. but now my new lbs said that only 94 and later had different spindle angles. i've looked all over the internut and can't find a definitive answer.

well basically, whenever i put back pressure on my right crank, it makes this horribly loud creaking noise. everything is tight. checked chainring bolts, crank bolts, pedals, lockring, cog, bottom bracket cups. only thing i haven't done is take apart the bb completely. any advice?

I don't want to make you cry, but you should check where the crankarm meets the spider for a crack in that absurdly thin web. If it's creaking it may be too late.

If there's a crack and it's not too deep (1/8 inch max) you may be able to file it out with a wee tiny rattail file. IIRC 5/32" (sometimes sold as a chainsaw sharpening file) is the appropriate size.

None of the quality BBs you have used should have an appreciable difference in taper, but there is a chance (the crank is 30+ years old after all) that the crankarm is bottoming on the spindle. 1. When you pull the bolt, is the end of the spindle flush with the washer surface on the crankarm? 2. Does the crankarm run into the end of the flats on the backside? If your answer is yes to 1. and no to 2., you may be able to grind a millimeter or two off the end of the spindle so you can get proper press on the crank/spindle interface.
