Road Bike Racing - I need some serious training advice

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Last month I started a structured training program (based on CTS) with a goal of riding TTs next season. I was 4 weeks into 16 weeks of foundation mileage (base mileage) - the aerobic base I seriously need as I am back on the bike after a long hiatus. Of course, circumstances changed and dictated a move. So now I find myself in East BF NC. To the N and NE I face 2,000 ft. of climbing almost right out the door. Routes to the W and S are somewhat flatter, but still involve grades of 5% - 12%, and there are a lot of not-great industrial roads.

So, basically, the terrain around here would be fine for a climber, but is far from what I need to build a good aerobic base. Carmichael calls for riding flat-to-rolling terrain for FM, keeping below a HR ceiling (140 BPM for me) and staying in the saddle. Even with 39x27 there is no way I can keep my HR down. The thought of spending mega hours on the trainer does not give me wood.

Advice please - and, no, moving is not an option.

Thanks

You've got to be somewhat flexible with the program to deal with the realities of where you are. It's ok if your HR goes above 140 from time to time. The point is try to keep most of the ride below the ceiling. So find roads with the least climbing, and just take it easy on the climbs as best you can.

Going to a compact with a 34x27 for your low gear might help also.

Where exactly are you? There are some flatter areas of NC in the mountains, particularly along the river valleys. Any way to get to something like that to do the majority of your workout?

Just wondering what your max HR and LT HR are. 140 or lower for keeping in aerobic zone seems quite low.

yep find a river, they are always flat, just require a hill back up at the end usually.
