Bicycle Mechanics - Lacing 32hole rim to 36hole hub?....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've seen a 32 hole hub laced to a 36 hole rim by skipping every 9th hole. I'm thinking that's it's possible to lace a 36 hole hub to a 32 hole rim by skipping two holes on each flange with the skipped holes 90 deg to each other.

I've sort of got it possibly sketched out on a CAD program, but I can only get it symmetrical by using a 2-cross pattern. I'd prefer 3-cross.

Has anyone done this? or know where I can find info about doing this? can the spokes still be all the same length for each side?

....just trying to use parts that I already have...

is that structurally safe?

OK, I had to check the calender to make sure it wasnt April 1st. Why bother?? Just splurge and spend 10 bucks on 32 hole rim.

I wouldn't give it a go either.

I've got the spoke pattern all figured out, and yes, it will be structurally safe.

Why bother? I've got a box of 36 hole hubs and a rack of 32 hole rims, I'm retired, I have a lot of spare time and I need to build a few wheels.

Thanks for the help....at least I can count on this forum to find out what color of bike I should buy.:D

BTW, can someone lend me $10?

It's your @ss, dude. In my opinion, if it were really okay, you wouldn't be the second person I've ever in my life "heard" ask the question. If you've figured it out, done the math, and you're really confident it's okay, go for it.

Geez. What forum is going to tell you it's okay? The one that says dump your Open Pros for some new Ksyriums? If you're going to get any common sense, run-what-ya-brung answers anywhere, it's here. Personally, I haven't a clue, and the structural aspects of a spoked wheel are subject to debate even among those with the background to intelligently discuss such things. But for the amount of time it took me to walk 5 miles home in cleats with my bike on my shoulder, I think I could scrounge $10.
