Classic & Vintage - DBR WCF Vertex build

Well as of last week I am the proud new/old owner of this great bike...I am in the process of rebuilding it...
Pretty much all original cept the seat..which is getting swapped out with a Flite I had laying around...also putting new forks on...as well as new shifters(XT or XTR Rapidfires) ...Relacing the rear wheel and a general clean-up...

the rack is gone...the manitou forks are Dead...but overall its in decent shape...

my question is....why can't I use Shifters for cants vs. v-brake...

I have never owned a v-brake bike...my current bike is a GT Avalanche with discs...race face and XT components...;)..

Oh... A little history...

Started with MTB from Raliegh back in 1989...then got a Biachi MTB...Old SKool......then bought a brand New Diamond Back Response Comp in 92...had that bike till 2001..then got a specialized Stumpjumper...sold it and got the GT..;)...After riding the GT...for the last couple of years....I missed my Steel Response Comp...from the old days...so I found this WCF Vertex on Ebay for $100...:)...Hopefullly it won't beat the snot out of me like the GT(Aluminum) Does...I hope to find a Karakoram in orange for another Retro Build.....:)

I can't answer your question about the mechanics of the brakes, but I can say that a Karakoram in orange would be awfully pretty :p .

Oh yeah...thanks for the welcome East...:)...Glad to be here....

another quicky question...Is it better to build Retro... with new stuff IE: forks, Gruppo's..with all the latest techy stuff like a Retro-Mod..;).......or old/new stuff...that originally came on the bike.....that not that functional today????

There's at least a few members here who've done some modern updates...bigbossman in particular. I think most of us like the components which came on the bikes originally. The older stuff is still functional, and generally EASY TO REPAIR :) .

As of this afternoon...it weighed.....24.30 lbs....:)....very cool...Next are the shifters....and thurough cleaning...new bars/grips....and some new brake pads...:)...its coming together...:o

From the look of those tyres in the background combined with that serious looking fork--I'd say you plan on some serious off-road use there, Bill :D .

I did a couple of things different than I originally Planned....
Everything is basically what I wanted but I changed a couple of things out...

-Went with New Deore V-Brakes...they actually lock up the rear and the front :mad: if I want to...:o
-Oury MTB Grips
-Easton 31.8 midrise bars
-Richey comp 120mm oversize Stem (31.8 for the big heft bars)
-new Jagwire cables all around
-Deore Alivio 8 Spd V-BrakeRapidfire Lever/shifter combo
-Used Mojo fork
-Ti Flite Gel
-relaced rear wheel...
-XT/LX Gruppo stock
-MAVIC 230 rims



This thing rocks...seriously...final weight went up to 25.1 but I am happy..:cry:
I will take pics tomorrow when i have my camera...I can't wait to ride this thing...

Overall...$ in the project....about $350...so I can't complain at all....

The problem is not the shifters, but the brake levers, which are usually a combined unit. Cantilevers and V-brakes and V-brakes are designed for different amounts of cable travel, with V-Brakes requiring more. Using V-brakes with a cantilever lever will result in brakes that are harder to modulate.

The good news is that many (unfortuantely not all) of the STI brifters have the option of cantilever and V-brake settings. If you pull on the brake lever you may see a red plastic spacer next to the retainer for the cable end. If so, your brake lever has the optional of dual settings. The spacer sits in slot with V (V-brake) stamped at one end and CA (cantilever) stamped at the other. On the underside of the lever, is a very small screw that holds the spacer in place. Remove this screw and remove the spacer. You can then slide the cable end retainer to the approriate position and replace the spacer.
