Hello,

I am new to the cycling scene and after doing much research on the internet have been recommended to start out with a Hybrid Bike. Since I am new to the scene I did not plan on spending four or five hundred dollars on a hobby I am not sure if I will follow through on. I went to my LBS and found two bikes that were in my price range. A Diamondback Kalamar for $269 dollars with two free tune ups. And at another LBS I found a Giant Cypress ST for $260 dollars with lifetime free tune ups. Again I know many of the people in this forum are hard core cyclists but I am just not there yet. Would anyone recommend any of these two bikes to a newbie?

TEST RIDE them. Then you can decide for your self.

Fwiw , last year I bought a Cypress for the wife and she's put about 400 miles on it since.....so far she really, really likes it....I've offered to get her a "road" bike and she says no.....she's very comfy on the Cypress.

My wife has been riding a Giant Sedona for some years now, and only recently decided to move to the Giant Suede. The Sedona is basically the same as the Cypress, only it runs 26" tires, where the Cypress runs 700c tires. I rode the Sedona for about a week, and found it to be a very nice, solid bike. It helped me to decide to come back into the diamond frame fold, away from recumbents. The Cypress is a great value, and if the LBS is offering "lifetime" tune-ups for a lower price, that could be huge as well.

But, you really need to take your time, and ride each as long and as far as each shop will let you. Hopefully, one will "speak" to you more than the other, and make your choice easier.

That said, I might also like to recommend the Specialized Expedition or Crossroads to you as well. I found these bikes to have better components, and felt better TO ME than the similar Giants. The LBS I visited had both Giant and Specialized in the shop, so I had the chance to try them back to back.
