Why don't you just come ride it with use girls, Bob? I know it would be nice to have you around climbing Baldy Road. :) I've NEVER climbed it which is why I want to do it. Have you climbed it?

Have you climbed it?I've only been down that road. It's the main road to Baldy. While not a freeway it's got more traffic than GRR, +Claremont is a long way out there. Maybe I'll run into you guys if I don't go up to Crystal Lake.

Oh wait... you mean us!
Truth is, Sonia pays the rest of us by the hour to hang out and be nice to him.
But don't tell him that. The poor guy thinks we actually like him. ;)

Oops, you weren't supposed to see that post, John

Why do you think we take so long when we're with you? We're really not that slow. We just need the money. :o

I might join ya to Crystal Lake Bob if it isn't raining. A 20% forecast is next to NGTH (not going to happen).:D

NOAA has a 30% chance of rain before 11pm on Friday but nothing for Saturday up there. Maybe a light dusting of snow over night. It won't be very warm at altitude but that climb is in the sun if it's out. I've been up there in the cold and it's not as bad as roads on the north side like GRR, AC, or Baldy.Just bring clothes for the decent.

I'd love to try Crystal Lake with you Bob, but I have to entertain family this weekend. So I'm sticking close to home, going to climb Bear Divide, 2nd summit on Little T and finish it off with a little Camp 9. Should be able to be home before noon.

Give me a rain check for Crystal Lake.

You'll be the death of me Bob.:D I should have thought about it a little more before deciding to go to Crystal Lake instead of Baldy with you and Bill. At least there's someplace to eat at Baldy. The clouds never really broke, and by the time I hit 5K, it was cold even climbing at my slow pace. I didn't brake 25 mph on the descent until I got below 2500 ft because the chill factor made it too cold to roll any faster. Well, that and all the rocks on the road. Great climb though Bob. Nice ride. Wish I could have taken some pictures today because it was beautiful. Hope you guys had a good ride over to Baldy.

I was regretting not going over there but didn't have enough water. How far did you go? Sounds like you made it up to AC the way you described the rocks on the road. I may try to get up there next Saturday. The sun never showed itself on our side either. It was cold but I've ridden in much worse, you just have to be prepared.

No, didn't make it all the way to AC. Bill's comment about "work" proved to be an understatement. I did make it to within 200 ft. (vert) of the Crystal Lake turn off, and had I known how close I was at the time, I would have finished that off, but the only hole in the clouds through which I could see blue sky was closing rapidly. I had taken 2 jackets and was going to decide which one to take up the hill based on whether it looked like rain. Since the sun was out at Encanto, and the last forcast I heard was that everything was supposed to clear by the afternoon, I left both of them behind figuring I'd tuff it out for awhile in anticipation of clear sky later.

There was plenty of water though available at 2 springs. I don't know how seasonal they might be, but both are identified on the USGS topo data for the area. The great white hunters were out in force, so wear bright colors if your headed that way. And, BTW, the sheriff was patrolling the road above the gate. He passed me while I was headed up and didn't blink an eye about being up there on a bike despite the posted prohibition.

There used to be water there. That's great if it's back in operation. I might head up there again either next week or the week after. Guess the sheriff was there patrolling the hunters.

Sorry; I ment two seperate and distinct locations where water comes out of the ground and forms a brook. They are adjacent to the road up in the last couple switchbacks before you get to Crystal Lake. I marked there locations on GPS for future reference. The first one is at a turnout where a small stream bed flows under the road, the second is located near an old house that sits up above the road on the north side.

Are you saying that the water is ok to drink? I've often wondered about that. That's about the most beautiful spot on the climb. Maybe that's where those cabins get water. Those springs have always been running every time I've been up there no matter how dry it gets .It can't get much drier than this year. That place where the steam goes under the road ,was under about 6 inches of water flowing OVER the road in 2005. It washed out a big section of road and a few cars were stranded right there. That's a great road ,I have to get up there soon.

I would certainly give it a preliminary taste test, but I've generally found most running ground water outside of inhabited areas to be potable with reasonable precautions, at least in the western mountain ranges.

Be sure and post next time you plan on going that way. If you don't mind slow company, I might be up for it.

When people have complained on this board about there being no water on the climb to Crystal Lake, I have posted about drinking out of the first spring that JustMe mentioned. I filled my bottles up there three different times this year. I wasn't sure if they were safe, but each time I was in the middle of a 6 hour day and my thirst got the better of me.

I would have to be pretty thirsty to try the springs ,but they sure look tempting that's for sure. Want to go up there on the 27th?

I might be up for doing it on the 27th. My problem is you guys usually ride too early for me. Post what time you're riding and I'll give it some serious thought. I've carried three bottles up there, but still been out of water and given in to the springs.
