General Cycling Discussion - Acceptable facial hair for a roadie?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Ok, this is kind of a silly topic, but I want some opinions. I got lazy and grew out a short beard, no mustache, only about 1/4 long. I got some unsolicited compliments from some pretty girls at school and decided to keep it. I showed up to a ride with a buddy I hadn't ridden with for a few weeks and he starts making fun of me. Also I've notice that many (most) recumbent riders have some degree of whiskers going on. So what's an acceptable amount of facial hair for a roadie? Will I be labled a Fred rockin the 5 oclock shadow? Should I just trade in my road bike and go 'bent? I know roadies can be snobbish when it comes to appropriate appearance :)

People who don't shave are trash. Every last one of them should be forced to ride a recumbent.
You might find something here (http://www.handlebarclub.co.uk/).

So- were you trying to impress the girls or the boys?
Do you really care? wow...

Shouldn't you be asking in the road cycling forum? that's where the majority of the insecure narcissists.... err, I mean roadies hang out.

Pretty girls, eh. Were they drunk? Were you drunk?

I can't give any favorable opinion because I think the beard/no mustache thing is the most idiotic look that today's "young people" have decided to go with. If you aren't Amish, either grow it or stow it.

I won't comment on the particular "look" but found (too) many years ago that a few days missing the razor was an odd but effective way to get some. Maybe they felt they could clean me up. :D

Who really cares?
I always grow out my facial hair when it gets colder here.
If I'm warm, I don't care what anyone thinks about my beard.

*I* am a roadie and I take offence to your posts. I am neither snobbish nor insecure nor narcissistic.
I, as ALL roadies, am practicable and use sound judgement with good common sense.
Do you have any idea how much aerodynamic drag that beard has? What about the extra weight you have to lug around? What about if you crash and get road rash on your face? That hair will make the rash worse and increase the chance of infection. Those are the main reasons that roadies shave their legs, you know - to lesson the aerodynamic drag, shave grams off your weight and for road rash.
Showing up with a beard is also dangerous. Yes dangerous! What if your beard got caught in a wheel or something? Or perhaps clogged up someones chain?
Tsk! Shave that off and NEVER do that again! Disgusting!

Now THAT is funny!
I suppose it depends on whether or not you shave your legs.

I have a mustache, a soul patch, and a small beard on my chin… I enjoy ridding my bike with all that growing out of my face, aerodynamic drag and all…
I have already been told that I’m a FRED by some in the roadie forum…(strange they have never even seen me) but I couldn’t care less… I just enjoy ridding my bike.

When I was in college, I had a beard. A 16-year-old girl told me it was cute. A 90-year-old woman said it make me look like an old man. I kept it. We'll save a spot in the Fred line for you.

Strangley enough, I believe that is the UCI limits on acceptable facial hair.

No there was no alcohol involved in either the compliments or the posting. I was gonna post this on the roadie forum, but since this was a silly thread to begin with, I figured there are enough shenanigans (sp?) going on in that board. I guess I'm a fred then. I'm getting close to getting those girls to ride with me though. Although I'll do so on my fixed gear, since beards and beers go well with fixies.
i have a beard, mustache and ponytail (Fignon is my hero!)...
but i'm a horrible, slow roadie...

Clearly you've never seen the 1985 movie, American Flyers and the scaaaaary, hairy Russian, Belov:

Plus, let's not forget Kevin Costner and Rae Dong Chong in that movie:

Beards rule. by having one as a roadie, you will be that uber-cool rebel that all the roadie chicks will flock to.
My own facial hair is acceptable to me.
UGH!
You people with facial hair, that dare call yourself a roadie, better not even THINK of talking to me should we meet on the road.
The girls like a slick chin when you are operating on them.
But you get a lot of attention from girls if you have a slight stubble.
I think a little stubble makes them think you have a high testosterone level.
Maybe they are right :)
Men have facial hair, boys and women don't.
But if you shave your legs and sport a beard, I'll expect to see you at the circus.

Silly boy. You just described me to a t. Though the beard is about ready to be trimmed back to a goatee.

I've had a beard or goatee since the late 80's. Never slowed me down. But having just persued thru 2000+ photos i took at a spring road race. I've notice the following trends.
Women and juniors - No facial hair
Cat 4, 5 and Masters 40 & 50+ - Plenty of facial hair
P123 and Mast 30+ - Not so much.

Far be it from me to ever call myself a ROADIE... I just enjoy ridding bicycles of all kinds...:) Call me a FRED, call me what you will, but just be careful to stay out of arms reach, and an inch or two out of kicking distance, when you do so... :D

I feel like roadies shouldn't have beards, but once you are in the post-roadie stage of your life, then it is acceptable.

Which circus ring do you perform in? ;)

Well, seeing how I am clean shaven and not aerodynamically challenged you'd never be able to catch me to kick me. Naner, naner, naaaaaneeerrrrr. :p
Ah, I tried growing a beard once, the stuff on my upper and lower lip was blonde, the stuff on my cheeks and chin was red and the stuff on my neck was black! I guess I'm kinda....plaid, strange though, my background isn't Scottish.
My wife thought it was funny.....still brings it up.....won't shut up about it already...
To the OP. Grow a beard if you want, there's no "acceptable facial hair rule" and if there is I'm gettin' off this planet.
I think your friend was making fun of you because you look differant. Don't we all make fun of people who shave of their beards, especially those whom we have only known to have a beard? I do! Lots of mileage out of that!
Roadies should not have facial hair. The only acceptable exception would be a nicely trimmed, porn mustache.

Wow… that is kind of strange… Hey, on the plus side, if your head ever goes gray you could let your beard grow out and look a lot like a calico cat… That would be interesting.:D

Wait a minute there, cowboy. I have a beard, and I like a variety of tasty beers. And the fact I got "fixed" after 2 kids has nothing to do with beer I drink, the beard I wear, or the bikes I ride (which have included a crossbike, a hybrid, and a road bike.:D

I see way more roadies with beards than recumbent riders. Where the heck did you pick that unbiased stereotype from?

Call 1/4" a beard? If you can't use a comb on it, it's not a beard, it's stubble
