I have been kicking around the idea of getting my CCIE, I would most likely have to fund it myself and on my own time. Are there any CCIE's here that would could provide me some advice?

yup. make sure you have solid experience with a bunch of cisco routers and all routing protocols. get the CCIE books that have routing simulators on CD roms if you don't have access to area routers and BGP routers. study hard. that is all. if you are gonna study yourself, then drop about 600clams on books.
any investment now is worth it if you pass the CCIE.

I have about 9 years of experience, with switching and routing. However I have never gone after any of the other Cisco certs. If you don't mind I have just a few questions.
1. What path did follow? Did you get other certs and work up to the CCIE or did you just go for the CCIE
2. Would you suggest renting a lab or buying one.
3. What tips do you have for the lab test?
4. How much time did you allow youself between the written test and the lab test

2. can't tell you. I used my own network which has +20 routers/15 sites
3. be smart. can't give info about the lab. I'd lose my cert
4. none, as i knew all the stuff i had to know.
