Looking at getting an aero helmet, and wondered what you all use? Also asking myself if it will really make a difference. My last tri had a 40k bike leg, and I was hoping to average 20mph but managed 19 and a half or so instead, still pleased though. What should one expect to gain from the aero helmet?
Thanks!

Do any of you use the Garneau Prologue, and if so, how do you like it?
I've bought a 07 Bell Meteor II over Winter and therefore haven't used yet... Though being only CE certified you won't be able to use it in the States.

I have an LG Prologue i picked up on Nashbar for cheap. I've only had a chance to use it once though... I figure i'll save it for the flat courses.

You can now use CE certified helmets in the US, apparently.

Cool article. Pity they didn't test a broader range of helmets - there are lots and lots more brands in Europe - I would've liked to see MET, Catlike, etc. compared...

Not USAT rules. Must be CPSC http://www.usatriathlon.org/upload/pdfs/usat_rules_download.pdf
CE helmets are allowed for Road cycling till 1st Jan 2010 when only the DOT and CPSC helmet standards will be recognized. http://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=2109
Here in Australia we can use CE approved helmet as the rules state that helmets that are approved by other National Triathlon body’s can be used here i.e CE approval UK triathlon. Unfortunately only Australian Standards approved helmets can be used for Cycling Australia events and Australian Time Trial Association races... The only TT helmet that has just received this standard is the comparably non aero Rudy Syton.

Bizarre... so they've temporarily made CE certification ok?
Makes no sense really.
(the irritating thing being that many companies that won't sell in the US because of litigation concerns (viz. MET) don't bother with CPSC, even if they'd pass it)
Aero helmets make a significant difference. Expect some price changes for 2008...
I ride a Rocket and really like it.
I think in general you pay for what you get....
LG Chrono, $80, better than non-aero helmets but the small tail isn't as effective.
LG Rocket/Giro Advantage, $130-150, good aerodynamics, probably as good as any.
Spiuk, $180, Is very light and has a closed in tail.

That's the one I'm looking at, but I was wondering if it would get hot pretty quickly in there, didn't see many vents. What was your experience?

Giro Advantage 2 here. I have also used the LG Rocket. I find the giro more stable, but seems warmer. THOUGH this is due to a smaller frontal area. The rocket has a wider front, allowing more air though. I assume this causes a small ammount of extra drag. So I race on the Advantage.

Rudy Syton. Got the supercomp to give the option of ear coverage. Very nice helmet, comfortable and light. Well ventilated and the front vents can be plugged. Definitely recommended.

Do you ever use the ear flaps? How about a visor? I like the "gladiator" look, but wondered how sturdy removable covers might be. What are the plugs made of?

Louis Garneau Rocket.

The ear flaps aren't bad, cut down on the wind noise if nothing else. I tend to ride without the visor though. Plugs are just plastic finished to match the helmet.
