Hi all,

Can someone please tell me of any universities that enforce bicycle laws.

Laws like stop signs, lights etc.

Thanks,

well, stop signs and lights and such would be traffic laws. a 'bicycle law' would be more like: gotta have a bell, must wear a helmet, no bmx-ing off the front steps of the su building.

Here at USC they are a little schizo in bike law enforcement. In one breath they'll say that bikes need to obey all vehicle laws, and then they have intersections where they expect cyclists to walk their bikes. All that being said the kids rarely obey any rules. For all of you who imagine some utopia if everyone rode a bicycle visit any large University and see the chaos and mayhem that result when "everyone" bicycles.

Actually the "utopia" I imagine is Finland, where about 36% of all trips are by bike, on a wonderful network of bike paths that make most paths here in the US look like back alleys out of some pulp novel.

What we usually see on campuses is the organic result of minimal rules that also seems to be similar to what happens in places like Vietnam and China.

The problem here is that the university is a nest of bad riding. That would be fine but then they start riding all over town at night without lights, runnning stop signs and riding down the wrong side of the road.

I meant traffic laws.

I've even had students tell me on this campus that I dont need to stop. They get annoyed because I stop at the stop signs and they have to swerve to avoid hitting me.

I find ASU area to be a place where I need to be on ultra high alert because of other cyclists breaking traffic laws. The closest ever collisions (with me on bike) I've had have all been in the campus area, all with cylists running at speed thru red lights and stop signs.
