Advocacy & Safety - SHARE the MUP!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Anyone ever get the paranoid idea that a stranger in a crowd might just suddenly snap and push you under a car/train/whatever? This one young woman in Finland just had that experience:
A 75-year old man was detained yesterday in Tampere, Finland for allegedly shoving an oncoming bicyclist off the combined bike/ped sidewalk and onto the driveway, where she was hit by on oncoming city bus. The driver managed to brake but could not avoid the accident entirely. The cyclist is now in hospital, she suffered multiple fractured bones, but is expected to recover.
She was apparently saved by the bus driver's quick reactions, relatively low speed (40kph when braking started) and the fact that her bike jammed under the bus, keeping her in front of the bus after the impact and not being run over. Before anyone asks, I don't know if she was wearing a helmet.
The man denies any wrongdoing, but fortunately there are witnesses. From what little information the police have given out it seems the man has diagnosed mental issues. He is possibly linked to other cases where cyclists / joggers have been harassed in the city MUPs.
I hope he gets charged with attempted manslaughter. He could not see the bus coming (he was walking in the same direction), so charging him with attempted murder might be stretching it a bit. Nevertheless he knew it's one of the city's busiest streets, so there was a good chance the girl would be in real danger. Hopefully they put him in a hospital and keep him there for the rest of his natural life.

a bit late for castration, though.
keep bikes on the roads. roads are for vehicles, MUPs are for kids sitting on toys.
perhaps i could say that MUPs are for muppets.
I don't think a MUP (for a lack of better term) is automatically a bad thing. It's a matter of allocating sufficient resources for them. I would take a properly designed, built and maintained MUP any day instead of road. Actually I'm fortunate enough to be able to do that every day.
Sadly, in this case it seems the resources in mental health care have been sorely lacking instead. This guy should not have been out in the first place.

No such thing. Seriously, manslaughter does not require intent so you can't attempt manslaughter.
This has nothing to do with bicycle safety or MUPs. It was just a crazy person doing something crazy.

....who are much better able to guard against random attacks by deranged passersby.

Just like when a motorist intentionally runs down a cyclist it's just a crazy person doing something crazy, right? Sometimes when a crazy person does a crazy thing it speaks of a larger issue. I don't know if that's the case here but without knowing more, you can't just write things off like that.
Finland?
Nice place. Been there?

No the part about the guy have documented mental issues is what makes him a crazy person.
Nope. All of my time in Scandinavia has been farther West.
It seems that even your cycling utopia has some bad apples.
Yup, crazy people exist everywhere.
Some even drive cars.
Do take note however that the reasonable speed of the bus, at 40kph, did allow the driver to stop before killing the cyclist.

Great line, that. I think I'll start using it as my sig, with your permission.
If that happened to me and I lived, I think the old man would not.

Well, no, I think it's extremely rare, and I don't fear it.
But nevertheless, that's exactly what happened to me (the "whatever" part.) I was attacked by pedestrians who were on the road (not MUP) and I fell and landed on my face.
Pretty.

^^^^^^Sometimes.
I bet you're scared of 55 mph two lane roads.

Perhaps you need to see the way MUPs are actually used in Finland, vice how poorly they are designed and used here.
Here MUPs are a joke. In Finland MUPs are for transportation. They work quite well.
Just because one person goes wacko, don't dismiss a whole system. Otherwise our auto centric road system should have been dismissed long ago with the first shooting road rager.
