General Cycling Discussion - Phoenix, Arizona is running out of gas

Phoenix is crazy right now .... 75% of the gas stations in town are completely out of gas and the ones that have gas left are charging incredible amounts for it.

A pipeline that brings in 30% of our gasoline was broken in July and is yet to be fixed. There saying atleast a week or two before it's fixed and gas starts flowing again. In the mean time they are bringing in trucks, but they can't bring in enough to meet the demand.

Watching the news this morning they had video of stores raising prices as high as 2.69. When I first started watching the highest prices they had found was 2.15 for the low grade unleaded.

Amazingly enough, looking out from my balcony, I can see 2 gas stations which still have gas and cars lined up down the street to get it, however I am yet to see a single bike head down the road.

I lived in PHX 22 years, best thing I ever did was move. However I would ride a bike from glendale to downtown (14mi) and arrive at the same time as the bus. Phx is ideal for hybrid or mountain bike commuting.

I just moved to Phoenix and like it a lot... the road biking here is awesome. Now that traffic is all backed up around the intersections though it's a little scary. Maybe once all the gas is gone the cyclists can take over the streets again! hahahaha

There ya go, people of Phoenix...get your bikes out of the garages and RIDE! That is a shame that the prices are so high, sounds like a bit of price fixing going on now. And to think I thought $1.56 was high!
Hmmmm, an entire city put on bikes, boggles the mind, doesn't it? Citizens getting healthier, roadways lasting decades instead of years, out of work highway employees becoming bike mechanics at the rash of new bike shops that spring to life, some foreign ruler having to tighten up his belt because of the lower oil imports to the US...so far, sounds okay!

Just got home from a 35 mile ride, sat down to eat lunch and saw this on CNN. Got a good laugh at the cheesed off people, man they are HOT. "I want my gasoline!!!!". Too funny.
I think if this were nation wide we would go into red alert and martial law for fear of revolt.

I found myself stuck in a gas line this morning thinking it was a bus that was holding us up! As soon as I realized what was going on I found a break in traffic and quickly left the thirsty beasts behind! I can fuel up at any park with a drinking fountain! I found it interesting at how quickly things can reach a crisis. Most of the prices I saw on the way in were around 2.00. Still pretty high. I told my wife I am not going to fill up my car until the pipe is fixed!

Long lines and 105*+outside makes for some very short fuses.

2.69 per gallon? In Britain it costs the equivalent of about 1.20 (us) per litre.

I was in Detroit a couple weeks ago. For me, it was cheap. $1.55US. That's about 50cents CDN per litre. In Toronto, they charge from 65-75cents depending on where and when.

The "gas crisis" as the media is now calling it seems to have lightened up a little .... the lines are shorter, the prices are higher.

The good thing, one of the news channels did a story about a local eye doctor that rode 30 miles into work. They made a big deal about it which was cool .... nice to see alternative modes of transportation getting a little coverage instead of watching lines of cars polluting their environment.

On another side note we had a rather large monsoon that I got caught in the beginning of on my bike. I didn't mind but I guess this made waiting in the gas lines unbearable because there were multiple stories of how the rain made even more of an inconveince.
