Greetings,

I want to invest in a cyclocross. Im new to this, but beleive its worth investing in a good bike initially. Id be using it for everything really. Roads, offroad, maybe even race eventually...

I looked at a specialized tricross sport and thought it looked pretty good. After research online however, it seems i may be better spending a little more on the comp. The thing is Kona caught my eye. Unfortunately none of my local bike shops stock kona, so test riding isnt easy unfortunately. I beleive i could get a Specialized comp ordered in for testing, as the local bike shop has the tricross sport and has the comp available online. Should i just stick with the pool of bikes available locally, bikes i can actually test before buying? Or is buying "blind" online, based on reviews etc an option, worth the risk?

In all honesty, the tricross sport was more than i wanted to spend. But as i say, after much research, ive realised that most of the time, you get what you pay for and i think id rather invest in the best bike i can afford.

Are there any others i should be considering?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

The Fuji Cross Comp is nicely equipped for $899 at Performance. My friends got one and I thought was a good buy.

K2 Enemy is 850 right now at REI for another 2 days or so. I just ordered one, and if I hate it I can return it. (http://www.rei.com/product/730696)

It seems like the lowest MSRPs on race-worthy bikes are around 1100 bucks, usually Aluminum with carbon fork, Tiagra components. The surly cross check has a good component spec for a bit less, but it's not really meant to be a race bike. That said, it's a good bike for anyone to have in their stable and it can certainly be raced, it just has its limits.

The K2 seems good but the Fuji is full 105 group for a similar price.

Good point. I'd jump on it if there was a Performance anywhere near here.

EDIT: I can't find the Fuji on the PB website. Any help?

just a blurb about online buying...

I have just finished my 3rd cyclocross race with a bike I got online,
and am pretty impressed with it. I saw 6 of these at the UCI races this
weekend...and some cat 2 elite were on the same bike

motobecane fantom cross, 795$. it is a really decent bike. totally raceable
and it takes a pounding and keeps on running just fine.

jus saying...you won't win any OCP awards with it, but it does the job
