okay, so i found a bike on craigslist that just might work as a fixie.

it's an odd one. as far as i can tell, it's a late-eighties/early-nineties specialized mtb, but by the time i paid my hundred bucks for it, somebody had put a set of those WTB 'dirt drops' on it, with barcons and aero road levers. also, it's got some of the narrowest 26" rims i've ever seen, with 26x1" slicks on it.

i'm almost tempted to keep it 'as is' as a commuter, but i've got a few bikes that can adequately fill that role already, and i'm sort of intrigued by the idea of a 26" fixie.

the only difficulty is going to be finding a rear wheel for it. at the moment it's got an old XT freehub on there, so i can't just jam a cog on.

oh well. if anyone's got any leads on prebuilt 26" fixed wheels, let me know. otherwise, i just might have to relearn wheelbuilding.

pictures to follow.

Surly is making a fixed/free mountain hub now, so these pre-built wheels may be have it.

Personally, I'd just grab a Surly hub, a Sun CR18 rim and build it my self. Can't get much cheaper and that set up works good.

well, this bike's not going to work as a fixie without some work. the dropouts, while they appeared horizontal at first glance, are only deep enough for the axle with no room to spare. what appeared to be more dropout behind the axle is actually a weird hole after the end of the dropout. this probably makes no sense as i'm describing it, but at some point i'll take a picture to illustrate it.

so the end result : this bike is now a commuter - moustache bars triple-wrapped with velox tape, gearing is half-step with granny, and i'm using the rack it came with. swapped the tires out for 26x1.25 paselas, and it's quicker than i expected.

still on the lookout for a fixed, though. i should never have sold my old one.
